In an interview at this years Comic Con, director Joss Whedon talked about the Collectors Edition Serenity DVD and a possible big screen sequel. Here are just a few snippets of that interview:
So after all is said and done, was Serenity profitable? Do you consider it a success?
Joss Whedon (JW): Its a success to the studio or else we wouldnt be doing a special edition DVD. They actually admitted as much on paper, which you know studios are loathe to do, and that was actually from the theatrical. Theatrical was a disappointment, as everyone knows, but it did go into the black. Then the DVD came and they took me aside and said We cant keep these things on the shelf. We want to do a special edition. And I didnt want to hear that because I knew it would have to be a truly special edition to make me happy. There had to be a real reason, some real goodies.
So what will the special edition have for us?
JW: We took some stuff from the region two version; the making of a really beautiful one thats a bit longer. It has the first read through for the movie with the cast, two years after the show ended. And it has the River Tam sessions, the stuff I did on the internet with Summer. We got to do another commentary too, Nathan, Summer, Ron and Adam I made sure it didnt go the same direction as the first commentary. It feels like this version will be something more for the people who would tend to buy both.

It’s everything on cable, really.
Tonight, Country Music Television was showing “In the Army Now”, starring Paulie Shore.
Arts & Entertainment was showing “Gene Simmons Family Jewels”, a reality show starring KISS’s guitarist and his family (which is kinda funny).
Sci-Fi showed Stargate the movie, which I hadn’t seen in several years. Early on in the movie, one of the scientists is played by Richard (Robert?) Kind, who also plays Lucius Lavin on Atlantis. It would be funny if they threw some sort of continuity in there.
I think it is kinda funny that Richard Kind is on Stargate Atlantis..
Haven’t seen Farscape. We thought Firefly is great. Grown daughter and son-in-law gave it to me for Christmas a year ago. I’ve watched it several times since then. Have you seen the episode titled “Train Job”? It was the show Joss Whedon wanted for the pilot.
Zoe: "Dear, we live on a spaceship."

It's funny that you mention this... "Family Jewels" is the first "reality show" that I've ever really watched more than parts of episodes. The one thing that I've seen on that show is that their two kids actually seem to be decent, well adjusted kids. It can be pretty amusing actually, though sometimes it seems that Gene is the butt of some rather mean jokes and abuse.

Check out Joss' commentary again... The Train Job was the first episode that Fox ran, after demanding a new pilot and giving them the weekend to write a new episode. From the beginning, the 2 part episode "Serenity" was supposed to be the pilot. Eventually it was shown, but near the end of the run, so there was no suspense when you know who was you know what-ed by a different you know who
I didn't want to have a spoiler for those of you who haven't seen the shows!

I wish the SF channel would bring back Enterprise. I have found the Episodes much better than they were given credit for.
And it was a heck of a shock when Wash bought it.
I happen to agree with you... That is why I think that SciFi and regular Network don’t mix.. Granted UPN is not a regular network. Again you are asking to much from SciFi to put on a actual show that is truly SciFi.. They need to show more classic movies such as Frankenfish...
It is criminal that Firefly was canceled. It would’ve been great...
Here’s hoping...and also that Universal straightens out their flawed thinking and starts releasing “Serenity” and all of their other titles on Blu-ray. ;)
It proves that Network executives have no brains...
I saw him on Broadway in The Producers. He played Max Bialystok and was pretty good.
I’ll be going to a Stargate convention in couple of weeks.. Going to see Michael Shanks and Paul McGillion.. I’m going to ask Paul what was it like to have Richard Kind on the set.
“I was a huge Farscape fan, but felt it collapsed in the final season.”
It started to wae on me about season 2. It seemed like the story line was:
1. Have a conflict.
2. Perform/attempt to perform sexual acts on:
a. each other
b. this week’s new character
c. miscellaneous set props
3. Rinse and Repeat.
Hmmm.....It says Paul McGillion is returning (as a recurring guest star) for Atlantis Season 4. At the risk of posting a spoiler, how do you figure they’ll do that?
Also, have you heard of any SG-1 characters moving to Atlantis?
Thats right! I haven’t watched the commentary for awhile.
Paul also played the part of young Ernest Littlefield in Stargate SG-1's first season episode "The Torment of Tantalus", the first Tau'ri to have passed through the Stargate after its burial.
Perhaps after passing through the Stargate as Ernest, part of his essence was dispersed and transferred to a random baby in Scotland, who became a doctor and joined the Atlantis crew. Yeah! That's the ticket!
That is putting it mildly! The end of Serenity just felt like Joss saying, "If they won't let me make more episodes then I'll just kill off everyone, screw the fans!" The ending just wasn't satisfying to me after that. As a writer, I understand the tension thing, and good guys get killed in 'real life' but it seemed petulant to me.
Consider the ending of the final season of "Buffy". It hasn't stopped Joss from continuing where he left off with the Buffy comic (which I haven't seen yet). But he certainly did a number on Sunnydale. And one of the main cast bought the big one and another was left up in the air (... until you saw the following season of "Angel", that is).
