The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

OMG. If I were drinking milk, it would be squirting out my nose right now.

That’s why I finished my glass of milk before coming back to the pc.

Sap gloves, the ones with powdered lead sewn in the back of the glove were available, but wearing them on duty often got a reprimand, carry only issue equipment, or so they would say.

My character is, at best, a private investigator. I'll bet he has at least one pair of sap gloves. And I think he has one of those telescoping batons, too. And he has a useful knife.

Speaking of knives ... here in Texas it is not uncommon to see a guy with a knife sheath on their belt. Is that common elsewhere?

Not uncommon in Vermont. I imagine it’s not uncommon anywhere that’s semi-rural and where folks don’t get riled up about such things.

I don’t even want to think about that...

Besides, somehow I doubt those are still functional, if you know what I mean.

I won’t claim to know the answer on that. :~)

Ok - I've got my blurb for the back cover:

"Unlike her best friend Marci Gervasio, Claire Tanner did not consider their upcoming summer at their friend Lachlan MacGillivray’s family lodge in the Scottish Highlands to be a dream vacation. Instead, it was her dream shot at fufilling the internship requirement for her Hotel and Restaurant Management degree. Not about to let a perfect opportunity be wasted by distractions, she tasked Marci with running interference against Lachlan’s romantic overtures and sightseeing plans. But Claire’s housekeeping and wedding usher duties are cut short when a series of terrorist attacks thrust Scotland once again into a war against tyranny not unlike the bloody struggles of antiquity that still echo throughout the great Highland glens. As the friends navigate a fourth-generation war, they discover that their fight is more than a struggle for survival or freedom, it is the struggle to grow beyond the limitations of history – to be its master rather than its victim."

That's my story, and I sticking to it.

In the service any time you are ‘under arms’ you have a hat on as regulation. Also any time you are outside but if you have a gun inside you usually have one on then too (where as normally indoors you take it off per regs.

I like that reg about wearing a hat when under arms. I will use that.

One of the tools that works real well after a EM pulse is a 1911 .45. There are a lot of people walking around after the pulse who are "under arms," one way or another.

Sounds good! I'd read it!

Watching The Bourne Supremacy in HD; cool! Eomer is a Russian bad guy in it.

I heard on G4 network that Karl Urban is going to play Dr. McCoy in the upcoming remake of Star Trek!

The Dog and his posse are actually quite interesting. Before every recovery, they hold hands and pray for their own safety, and the safety of the people they hunt.

I may use that for my character, too ...

So if I send my Finder on the prowl, he should have at least a hat, face paint, and gloves.

It depends on where he's "hunting", and how skillful the prey is. Camouflage is used to trick the brain into thinking, "there's nothing here". "Blending in" just means you're a harmless part of the street scene, and you belong.

If we're talking urban "finding" during the daytime, anything innocuous will work. If he's going to take someone down at Home Despot, an orange vest and phony name tag will work, especially if you've just helped someone else with a purchase. At night, when nobody is supposed to be out, I'd go with black/white/gray "urban camouflage", or Army ACU. I'd also recommend some face paint, rather than a ski mask. People wearing ski masks off the ski slope are prime targets for being shot on sight.

<laughing!>Actually, this is the first time I've ever seen "Baby Lyssa" (Dog's daughter, at the far left) in anything like that. She usually wears a pair of jeans and a girly top, and she's the one who knocks on doors. She looks too young and innocent to be one of Dog's posse.

And, yeah, Leland often breaks the windows ... I never connected that activity with the gloves! <doinking self on forehead>

I wouldn't dress like a cable TV guy, too many people out there ready to shoot him on general principles.

I am minded of one of my favorite scenes from the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?:

Urchin (with shotgun): You men from the bank?
Pete: You Wash's boy?
Urchin: Yassir! And Daddy tolt me I'm to shoot whosoever from the bank!
Delmar: Well, we ain't from no bank, young feller.
Urchin: Yassir! I'm also suppose to shoot folks servin' papers!
Delmar: Well we ain't got no papers.
Urchin: Yassir! I nicked the census man!
Delmar: There's a good boy.

It depends on where he's "hunting", and how skillful the prey is.

Forest area in the U.P., possibly on the Keweenaw, in the middle of the night, in the month of May ... I think he needs dark waterproof clothes and face paint ...
