The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...
Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

My honey’s been trying to tell me Tony’s not dead. He never did get a silent clock. Well, it all sounds very exciting. I didn’t Janeane.
Good morning. How’s Jr. and the car?

Im mostly trying to figure out a way to poison someone through food
To: RosieCotton
Well...to begin with, just writing something gives it a sense of authority, even if youre actually wrong. ;-) And as Rose said, a lot of the time, its just a matter of talking to folks who *do* know, and who are happy to explain things! Except, as I keep sayin and sayin, we really need a couple of doctors and a lawyer or two around here. *sigh* I have a feeling Im going to have huge blanks spots with notes like "go do research" and "what makes you think this will work here?"...not to mention stream of consciousness peppered with WTF?! LOL

Cisco rolled in something unspeakably nasty today. I dont even know quite what it was, but it was rank and crustyWas it animal or vegetable?
Good morning :~D

I like the red! I’m looking forward to a place that’s worth bright paint... heh... someday!
To: Alkhin
That’s fine! Just don’t let yourself get distracted by research during November. Write in November, take December off, start fixing things in January.

I have similar problems with a lot of moral issues. Theres a fine line between whats necessary for the narrative and whats territory I just dont want to visit. And Im never quite sure how much language I should allow my characters to use. I mean...if Im not trying to pass them off as good, then is it OK to have them say / do things I really, really wouldnt be involved with? That sounds like something Im going through right now - I want to give my story/characters to struggle with, but how far down the road do I want to go?

Er...animal, I think. Though it might have partially consisted of vegetables run through animal...
Whatever it was, it was nasty.

How would he find something like that in your yard though?

Hows Jr. and the car? He's in class and I've been on the phone with insurance. Gonna take it to our mechanic to make sure it's safe to drive. If not, at least I have rental coverage.

I have no idea...unless there’s a very, very large squirrel out there that I don’t know about...

Hey, congrats! Always good to have more insane people! My only advice is make sure you always hit your daily goal for word count (even if your goal for a particular day is less than 1666, which is the daily average) and be sure to know what you are going to write when you sit down on November 1. November 2 can take care of itself but it really helps to know your opening paragraphs. LOL - yep I am DEFINITELY insane. Thanks, JenB - I know I am in good company!
Is that what an average goal is? About 1500 words?? I *think* I can manage that, at least for the first day. I know the NaNo people say dont start with work youve already started, but really my novel is based on a bit of a blurb I jotted down in a moment when the muse hit that basically encapsulates who my MC is and what makes her special.

1667 words every day would get you there. So figure out how to fit that into your life. If some days you just know you won’t get more than 500 in, then other days you will need 2500.
Try to get a word count buffer - write a few thousand extra words the first weekend and that will help you get through. Like if you write 2000 words for three days, then the fourth day only 500, your average is still ok.
In my mind, blurbs are fine. Starting with three chapters already done is not.

You’re allowed to do as much character sketching, outlining, scene planning, etc. as you want, so a blurb isn’t really outside the rules.
Now...starting with a half-written story isn’t really kosher. That’s different.
I did it anyhow last year, but...I knew it was a cheat. I just wanted to push myself to work on that story.
Which I still haven’t finished. *sigh* Especially since one secondary character took charge and the main character wandered off and now really belongs in a book of her own. My attempts to stuff her back in were pretty disastrous. So it’s now *two* raw, unfinished stories instead of one. Way to go, Rosie.

Eduardo Verástegui is a durn fine-lookin' manDrool worthy, for sure. But those pictures of Lainie Kazan have to be at least 25 yrs. old. She was the mother of the bride in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, though she IS still pretty hot looking! But if you're looking for an older woman/younger man thing, they certainly would do nicely!

Frankly, I don't see the desire for such a hugh hunk of metal in the kitchen. But then, I'm partial to wall ovens so I don't have to bend over and lift stuff out of them! LOL! I'm also thinking I might like to have an induction cooktop. About the only thing I couldn't do on one of those is stir-fry in a wok, but THAT can be solved by having a separate tepanyaki grill installed in the countertop. ;o)
