The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Which, in his car, is about as plausible as Warp 9.

HI Everyone! I just wanted to say hello again - Id write more, but I am FRAZZLED - we were at the Texas Renaissance Festival there (I should have asked our Freeper Xena if she was going to be there...) - they had a couple of special days for school kids during the week and we took our homeschoolers there for a bit of fun. The girls all dressed up as fairies and elicited a lot of compliments. But I am BEAT and probably not very coherent. Im gonna beg off until Ive had a night's sleep!

HUGS TO EVERYONE!

That's true. But I watched the officer listen to her story. He knew it was B.S.

Wow, that was some wreck, but great news JR is okay. Cars can fixed, people sometimes, not so easy to fix.

Sounds like a close call. Good young reflexes can sure help out at times like this.

Bottle of bourbon and shot glass. No mixers required. Minimum effort - maximum effect.

Thank goodness he's ok! I'm also glad he was driving defensively, which kept him from getting broadsided at the front passenger door!

Paul had a night like that once. He was taking a friend home and got caught in a slight rain that froze when it hit the streets. He said it was like being in a pinball game with folks sliding and bouncing off each other all over the place. Fortunately, there wasn't any real damage to SirKit's road warrior Crown Vic, though he hit two people and three people hit him. Everyone was driving pretty slowly because of the conditions. No one even bothered calling the police, because there was so little damage to anyone.

A member of the senior management team looked me in the eye and said, "That'll never happen."

Goober.

Actually the way he described it, swerving kept him from broadsiding her. Which, in his Honda vs. her Minivan, wouldn’t have been pretty.

The worse damage was to the two at the end. The van behind Jr. stopped on her own, and a Nissan stopped behind her. The last Nissan plowed into that one, knocking the first one into the van. Both Nissans had to be towed away. One was only three months old.

Corin, all I can say is, be true to the character. You can star the word out, if that makes you feel better ... or you can say that your character despised his father, and taught himself not to use it. But a man in the Klan probably used that word a time or two, and probably exhibited various associated mannerisms.

Thanks. I value your opinion particularly on this one.

The father is dead at the telling of the story. But there are flashbacks. And there will be inevitable references to desegregation and the like. What’s tricky is that, in that era and that location, it was probably pretty common to hear.

Although it’s conceivable since my main character is also the narrator (these are his flashbacks) that he could tell the story without saying that. That may be the best way to deal with it.

That's well understood. It's not like I don't have those fears often.

I was actually quite proud of how he handled things tonight. The only time I had to smack him was when he could find the registration card.

*sigh*

Bathing a wiggly dog with a lab’s water resistant coat at 8PM on a weeknight isn’t anywhere in my description of fun...

At least it’s done.

Cisco rolled in something unspeakably nasty today. I don’t even know quite what it was, but it was rank and crusty, if that’s not TMI... The bad thing is, I doubt I’ll find it before work tomorrow. We may get to play this game again. Goody.

Your character could explain why he doesn't use that word --- comparing and contrasting himself with his parent.

I got my first assignment today, for Friday. 7pm to 7am. It’s private duty hospice, so the pay is on the low end of the scale, but it’s work.

I got some new scrubs and some new shoes on sale at a uniform shop.

I can hardly believe it...the whole thing doesn’t feel real.

I’m trying to stay up late to get ready for the all-nighter.

So...which story are you going to write? ;-)

I’m just hoping all my planning won’t be in vain...I’ve never done as much planning as I’ve been doing before. Considering in general, no matter how detailed an outline I come up with, I stray from it after the first thousand words or so...all planning may be for naught. Lotta wasted index cards, scrap paper, and typewriter ink.
