The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Indeed.

We had ribs and chicken and mashed taters and such for lunch. Mmmm...free lunch...

And now I’m trying to ‘splain to Internet Explorer that it doesn’t *have* to mangle any tables I feed it. It isn’t altogether listening, however. It’s almost as deef as Microsoft Word. Word and I almost never agree on formatting issues.

I rather like my typewriter...

You know, my character is writing from the back porch on an old Smith-Corona typewriter. There was a 1950-ish model on Craigslist last week. I almost bought it.

Mmmm...'50s Smith-Corona...

If it was cheap, I probably woulda bought it. ;-) I have no self-control where old writing instruments are concerned. And Smith-Coronas are about the easiest ones to find ribbons and that for. They don't die.

I wouldn't mind having a '50s era Smith-Corona. Like this one:

Maybe one a bit older, even.

And nobody even sends you fish.

We would have brought you a fish from Japan but you’re not allowed to bring them back.

After all this time, excuses like that ring pretty hollow...

The building that housed the cop shop and various municipal services, including volunteer fire department and the mayor's office, took a direct hit from a softball-sized chunk of crystal and stone. The whole building collapsed.

I think you need a bigger rock for that. THere have been cases of ones that big hitting things and they don't do enough to take out a building that size. Google some meteor impacts. Make it the size of a clothes washer and blow the place up.

Nah, it only needs to be softball-sized ... it hit a gas line. Ka-blooey!

Ok, I have to get my house back together, write my term paper, and try to finish my plot. In one week.

AND the local SF con is the first weekend of November and AnimeIowa is having a staff meeting at that con so we can’t skip. And we’ll probably have house guests that weekend too.

At least I’m excited about my story.

Incidentally, before the 50s, they were called Coronas rather than Smith-Coronas, though most say “L.C. Smith and Corona Typewriters, Inc.” on them somewhere.

In case you need that for story purposes...

I’ll shut up now. ;-)
