The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Not Valerie is on an email rampage this morning setting people straight (”No Maya Angelou did NOT write that, here’s who did...”)...

I’m just gonna stay over here quietly until she’s done.

OK, I need a name.

I’m trying to think of one of those last-name-as-first-name types of names, like Harrison or Jackson...but not those. It needs to be something a bit pretentious, or cumbersome and incapable of being shortened, or silly as a first name - one of those sorts of names that lead the poor bearer to abbreviate it to an initial and just go by their middle name. Either that or a very, very old-fashioned or ridiculous first name. He’s gonna have a number at the end, too, if that makes a difference. Probably a IV.

That sounds like the smart thing to do.

I’m sipping coffee and trying to figure out if there’s anything I am just forgetting to do! I leave tomorrow on my trip to OK... at 0:dark:30

Not necessarily in need of shortening:
Carson
Graham
Grant

Might need shortening:
Jefferson
Ashley
Francis
Marion

What did Angelou supposedly write?

I went off on a rant a couple years ago. It was in response to a "Poor, poor, oppresed Alice Paul" Feminazi-gram. Absolute rubbish. I wrote a great essay in response. I wonder if it ever made it's way into that mysterious, hazy internet land where stupid emails come from.

Text of Not Valerie's email:

The author of the quote "A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ that a man should have to seek Him first to find her" is UNKNOWN.

The author of the poem, "When I say "I am a Christian," is Carol Wimmer. This was originally published in the Assemblies of God magazine in 1988.

Maya Angelo did NOT pen either of these.

This is from a woman in the choir who apparently feels called to encourage us all. We're wishing she didn't have our email.

So, there's that.

Upon further reflection Angelou is enough of a manhater that I would readily believe she wrote "A woman's heart should be so hidden from a man, that he will never find it. Especially God."

Just a thought.

On the other hand, just got another email from the spammage person saying “let me know if you want me to take you off the list.”

I hope I replied before her inbox filled up.

Most of those aren’t nearly annoying enough...

See, I’m thinking like Bellingham, if that was an actual last name and not a town. It probably is, but I wouldn’t use it, so I’m gonna be lazy and not check.

It’s too much of a mouthful to use as is...but how do you shorten it? Bell? Ack! Ham? Not much better...

So the poor guy would probably resort to either using his middle name, or else go by Bud or Spike or something like that. ;-) We have examples of this back home, strangely enough, considering it’s mostly farmers who have histories going back lots of generations. There are a names like Clarence Reginald Willson III...whereupon the guy goes by Butch. Heh.
