This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
If you mean the two Golden Retrievers, we sent the older male back and the female pup, I gave to my husband. I posted a picture of her sitting on his golf cart, a few weeks back.
The puppies are doing fine. We put a heat lamp in the stall to keep them warm. The mother looks like her bags are bigger, now that she is getting fed on a regular basis. She is a very nice dog Janis and I wish I could send her to you.
We also have the two cats now. Ben picked them up the other day, because they were shutting the utilities off in the house. Really nice orange male and a beautiful gray kitten, about 5 months old. Both are thin also. They are suppose to be going to the house of one of the kids parents. I sure hope so, this many animals is just too much. The cats are in the basement and this household is in an uproar!
Well, I’m thinking the martingale, headstall, a medicine bag - etc. One of my problems is I want to use a lot of traditional materials - shells, wood beads, things like that. Then I want to have the rider (Janelle) be a medicine woman. I’ve found a lot of pictures, partly it’s a matter of do I make a traditional costume with traditional material or do I go for the fancy beading that’s being made by the tribes now and that is winning. And if I do that, how do I afford it?
If the fancy beading is expensive, somebody is always going to out-spend you. Myself, I would go with the straight traditional look (especially if you have a nice looking horse).
(How long ago was it that the judges were embarassed by not placing the actual Indian with actual antique accoutrements?)
Do you have a source for the shells and wood beads and so forth? I had really good luck with Crazy Crow Trading Post - they have a wide selection, a good online catalog, and they shipped VERY promptly. Stuff is good quality too.
Funny thing: one of the models in their catalog was in the video in the women's dress exhibition in the Smithsonian. She and her mother make the traditional buckskin dresses with elk teeth and shells.
I would do as AAM said and go traditional for all of the same reasons that she stated. :-)
That Cyn doesn't have the sense to stay out of...
Not sure if anyone is living in here or not... but I did notice something is living in our other birdhouse... I'll have to get pictures of it next time I'm out.
Drainage ditch is carrying as much as it can....
Walking around knocking the ice off the white tape so we can turn the fence back on... (shows why we turn it off when it's going to snow so it doesn't just short out)
View looking back toward the house...
It's a wet one. Predicted that the wind might pick up tonight and tomorrow. That probably won't improve things at all :~\
That has gone from pretty to nasty in short order.
Slushy snow just isn't much fun for anyone -- except to look at while sipping hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire.
No... it’s not fun at all... it’s just a mess.
Thanks both of you. That’s what I’m going to do then. And AAM, thanks for the link. I’ve got a lot of shells and wood beads already (thrift store necklaces taken apart) but I was wondering where to get the rest of the stuff I need.
Ick.
Wind picked up for awhile, we moved the trucks out. It’s going to be a long 48 hours, a couple windy systems coming through.
Oh man, I’ll keep you guys in my prayers. I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with that, I’m a real coward at heart.
I’m getting a little weary of it myself. This constant being on edge all winter is getting to me to the point where I want to call the landlord and tell him to log this property! We’re in a cycle where we’re just getting slammed by storm after storm the last couple winters, it would seem.
I don’t know if I have an irrational, or completely rational fear about it. I won’t know till a tree comes down and then I will vindicated, but I don’t want that to happen. All things considered, we’ve done great through all this and no reason to think our trees can’t handle it. They have before! But I’m spending too much time being scared. I don’t like it.
Anyway...
About to have a little lull here for several hours, we may go out and have a couple drinks. Can’t hurt, right?
I think a drink would help a whole lot. I don’t think your fear is irrational at all. Those are some really tall trees - one coming down wrong could take out your house, your trucks or your barn. It wouldn’t be so bad if you hadn’t had so much water - that makes it worse.
Well, we decided to stay here, town seemed like a lot of work, but I’m still going to have a drink after dinner :~)
Having a turkey pot pie... comfort food. :~)
Enjoy :) Deli baked chicken here - my kitchen is torn up.
Poor dog has chased nothing but tennis balls and didn't know what a bumper was. But she improved rapidly, and after about 20 minutes we had her doing "depth perception drill" (bird boy throws the bumper left, right, back, and towards the dog) and returning the bumper 'to the area of the handler'. I sent them home with a couple of puppy bumpers, since my pup is retrieving full size bumpers now.
Took Miss Ruby out also to demonstrate the depth perception drill, and had my husband throw BIG for her - around 100 yards. That dog is a rocket! The Boykin broke and ran for one of Ruby's bumpers, she was 50 yards ahead of Ruby, and Ruby closed the distance and passed her like she was standing still. Like having a greyhound on steroids in the house.
Good morning, fairly humorless day here for us... many inches of rain overnight and high winds expected. Been up since 1:00.
Just fed the horses out in the pasture, it’s real wet, but they feel better out there.
Positive tall tree thoughts, as always, appreciated. We’ll check in as we can, ready to bug out if we need to.
Good morning to you too. Sorry for the nasty weather.
I just heard an interesting story on the news...A police officer was cruising thru the night, when a horse came out of no where crashed into his car, the horses head coming thru the window hitting the officer and giving him a concussion. The car looked pretty bad. The officer is in the hospital. Others came and rounded up the horse, but do not know it’s owner. The news reported did not know the condition of the horse.
Becky
Dang... that happened locally there?
