FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

That’s so great to hear about Lori! I know it’ll be a scary time for all involved but have faith that it will all work out according to God’s plan and she’ll be back on her feet and feeling like a million bucks in no time. I’ll be praying for her!

Good Morning! My PC here at work has croaked again, so here I sit in an infamiliar office in an unfamiliar area with a strange computer. :-/ I can’t get my e-mail, but at least I have internet. Thank heavens for small miracles!

We got a decent rain here last night, but it came wrapped in some pretty big thunderstorms. It hasn’t done that here in so long that I’d almost forgotten what it was like. Made me a little nervous for a while, but it blew over pretty quick. It’s gorgeous out there now, but quite a bit colder. Supposed to be another pretty food freeze tonight. It’s about time I guess.

Huh... Hope you had your hatches battered down ;~) It was pretty cool watching the storm at Becky’s, much more action than we ever get from our wimpy TStorms. Did you get high winds with it? Or just a lot of light and noise?

You’re colder than we are. We’re wet and around 50 this morning.

We have clear skies, beautiful sunshine, but windy, and cold, right at 40 right now.

Hopefully, it will warm up a bit...today is the 10th day Harley has “rested”...I need to check him and see how his leg is doing. The vet said he should be fine after 10 days or so.

The wind got pretty high there for a few minutes, enough to make me think about moving vehicles, but not enough to make me run out in the rain. They say our high for today might reach 50. That's a bit of a change from yesterday when it was 79.

It’s clear and windy here too. The gusts are supposed to be up around 30mph, and that’s a LOT for this area for a clear day.

So are you going to ride him or just lunge him?

LOL...I don’t know:)...I’m scared to do anything. It’s one of those I want to know, I don’t want to know:)

Need to do something tho:\ It’s going to have to be a two part check. The last time I rode him when the people came he was fine when I rode him, then lame when they got here later in the day. The vet said that the riding I did in the morning irritated it and THEN got sore...So I’m guessing that even if he is fine the first time, he may be sore later...sigh...makes me ill just thinking about it.

He’s still off a tiny bit on the lunge line, so we’re back to “resting”.:(

The farrier comes tomorrow...wonder if that will make a difference?

Well that’s a bummer!

I wouldn’t think that having shoes reset could hurt anything, and it might even help, unless he wrenches his ankles when he’s pulling the shoes off or something really weird like that. I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyways.

In the meantime, Hope is getting plenty of exercise. Billy rode her probably 15 miles last weekend and Elizabeth is going to ride her on Saturday. We’re planning a trip up to the Natchez Trace trail near Nashville. That’ll be a 6-hour/25 miler. I’ll probably ride Grace again because I think 25 miles is probably a little too far to ride Miss Ellie until she’s a little older.

On the first day, God created the dog and said: “Sit all day by the
door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this,
I will give you a life span of twenty years.”

The dog said: “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten
years and I ‘ll give you back the other ten?”

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said:
“Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll
give you a twenty-year life span.”

The monkey said: “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty
long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?”

And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: “You must go into
the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have
calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give
you a life span of sixty years.”

The cow said: “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for
sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?”

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: “Eat, sleep, play,
marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you Twenty years.”

But man said: “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my
twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the
ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

“Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.”

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and
enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support
our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the
grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch
And bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you...

We're looking for a first horse for our 15 y.o., and perhaps (maybe now, maybe spring) a horse for me. The 15 y.o. is typically shallow about her horse - she wants a paint or palomino - mom wants safe. :-) She's not a very experienced rider. She's small - about 104 lbs and 5 ft tall. I'm thinking even a gaited horse of some type, she hasn't gotten the posting thing down very well.

Hey there Frog, glad that you’re getting out and riding! It has been pretty slow horse wise for me. Today I got it into my head that I want to start looking for a horse again.

What do yall think of this?

Subjects discussed: Natural horsekeeping, Diet, Exercise for the hooves, what makes a good trim (trimming will be done on a cadaver foot)... WHY the hoof works the way it does and we will be doing a dissection to show how the inner mechanics of the hoof interact and what each movement does. It will be very enlightening for the average horse owner and you will leave with a much better understanding of what "shape" the hoof needs to maintain for the comfort and health of the horse.

Kind of reminds me of a day when we had possible hail coming. My husband told me if it started, to put my car under an open garage across the parking lot. Like I’m going to run out in a hail storm:’)

Good Morning everyone. Happy Friday! We still have some wind and rain left over from yesterday's storm, so we'll see if I can get to the barn. So far every attempt that I have made this week has been shot down in one way or another.

Cindy, the hoof clinic sounds interesting. I raised my eyebrows at the Natural Horsekeeping part, but the hoof topics sound interesting and informative. I'll bet you'll learn something.
