FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Thursday.

Here’s the thing I’m thinking about, since I think comfort-wise he’s done pretty well in the pasture barefoot, I’m thinking of putting them on for this one last cycle, and then pulling them for winter. Both for cost and for keeping ahead of any bungus issues he might have now during the wet of winter.

I wonder if there’s a pro and con of that in terms of his Navicular? I think I’m going to pose that question, would like to ask Patty in particular.

I have had real good luck with my mare, who was a broodmare until age 14. We got her for next to nothing, she was unbroken, but we put a saddle on her and rode her off - not a buck in her. I've got about 5 years' work in her now, she's good to hunt or to show, if we go in a local (unrated) show I can count on her finishing in the top 3 whether on the flat or over fences.

She is a registered TB, nicely conformed (if you like that swan-like -- or snake-like -- TB neck) and has the most equable temperament of any horse I've ever had much to do with. She also adjusts her behavior to her rider -- last Tuesday the Special Olympics people were using her and they were a little bit concerned when they saw us doing a 3' hunter course in the ring about 30 minutes before their session (she DOES love to jump). But of course she was as good as gold with the little kid.

There have been times I’d like to pull shoes thru the winter.

So, do you expect the fungus to come back when he is shod?

I don’t know. It’s not something I’ve dealt with before and I’m still not completely sure why I’m dealing with it now.

It’s nice to see your horse has worked out so good for you. This will be our third rescue in 6 years.I really didn’t need another horse, but the thought of her going back to maybe be sold in a killer auction was just too much.So here we go again, gonna see what kind of horse she becomes when she knows her home is secure and she has people that really care about her. Some people should never own horses, that’s why we rescued Rosie the pony.Rosie was used as a therapy pony for handicapped children until she foundered.Instead of fixing her problem, they just threw her away like she was nothing.By the time we got her her feet were hopeless. We’ve been able to avoid further founder by watching her diet, and our farrier trims her every 6 weeks. She’s never going to be right but she enjoys the life she has.

I know there is still time, but so I can get a tentative idea of when I’m going to need to be around here to meet everyone or pick them up from the airport, if you could let me know approximately which day and what time you think you may be coming in let me know. Don’t worry, last minute changes can be worked out:) I know that Frog and Blade are coming on Thurs evening, I’m just not sure about the rest.

I’m just really looking forward to our visit and already making plans:) It’s coming up fast:)

Not exactly sure when I will be there. Just when I hop in the truck and start driving. When the rest come, I guess. It will take me a few days to get there. I need to make a planner in case there a things to see on the way. I have been to Sperry to pick up my ex at blacksmiths school, so I know it is really not that bad of a trip.

Just got back from the show. It rained all night, so they held the show indoors. Alison won firsts in trail and egg and spoon, seconds in pleasure and horsemanship and a fourth in showmanship. She most likely won hi-point. Amy won a first in trail, then I left. She still had a couple of classes, but I didn’t feel like staying. The best part was Dakota won the walk-trot pleasure stakes with his new horse. For only the third show, that horse is going to be really good.

This rain has made me so sleepy.

I’ll try to get some pictures up ASAP.She’s a light chocolate bay with a white blaze, big soft dark eyes.Stands about 15 hands plus or minus, she might weigh 1000 lbs.The vet checked her and said she’s in robust health. She has a large freeze branded number “339”on the left side of her neck.Overall she looks like a working ranch horse should look,I’m pretty excited to be getting started with her-I’ve just got a feeling that she’s going to be a great trail horse and more important to me,a good friend. All 6 of ours are just like family members, same as our dogs.

Amazing! (amazingly bad!) Of all people, you would think that the folks who work with handicapped children would not throw away a pony. After all, there are plenty of people who want to throw away the handicapped children!

Thanks. Amy called on the way home and said Dakota won 3 more classes! Alison did win hi-point, 50 bucks! Woot, better than a trophy. Amy also won a couple of seconds. Good day for them. I forgot my camera and you people would have enjoyed seeing the dressage arenas at this farm. 3 or 4 of them. Very nice. No horses were working today, but I would have loved to seem them.
