FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Is everyone freezing? Down in Sc here I’m so cold I can’t describe it. Coming from Ohio but being here 2 1/2 yrs, I think my body changed. I can’t tolerate the cold anymore...it was 29 degrees this AM and the horses water trough was frozen.

Yesterday was somewhat pleasant so I took a ride with Waylon and my dog and at the end of the trail I came across two feral pigs....scared me to death.......gosh were they big.

Yeah, we've been below freezing here for longer than I ever remember. We usually get a couple of days below freezing in February, but then it warms back up and gives you a break. My "frost free" faucet at the barn is frozen down in the ground, so I had to drag my 150 gallon stock tank all the way from the barn to the corner of the pasture closest to my BIL's house and run hoses from his frost free faucet on the back of the house to fill it up. That gave me a couple of days of leeway, since I've got a heater on it, but when I went to refill it today the OTHER faucet was frozen. But it's supposed to warm up next week and I think I have enough water to last until then. If not, I guess I'll be hauling it in barrels in the back of the truck from somewhere else. NOT my idea of fun! It ain't supposed to BE this way down here! {Whine!}

We’ve got wild pigs all over the Forest down here too. They’re absolutely tearing the place up. We very seldom see them though, just their sign. Be careful if you come up on a sow with her babies. They would just as soon gut you as look at you. They’ve declared open season on them around here, but a friend of mine lost all but one of his hunting dogs to one boar when he went hunting them, even though they had kevlar vests on. They’re MEAN!

I did do something fun today though. My husband and I drove out in the Forest then walked to one of the big waterfalls that's not too far off the road. I had never seen it frozen before, so I really wanted to go there while it was still this cold. It was really pretty...

How did I miss all of these pictures? Your house is going to be beautiful. Is it going to be split level? I can just see a big porch across the front.

Hi Hair - my cousins and my DIL want me on facebook, along with Speed’s owner. The problem is, I don’t want my name out there in cyberland any more than necessary.

Hey those icicles look like the front of my house! lol Sure does look pretty. The forest can be beautiful in the winter.

It was 9 this morning here. But, that is typical for this area. How awful for the Southern States, especially Florida and the crops. Next month is the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, FL and hopefully, the crop was spared too much damage.

The horses have been let out everyday with blankets on. They just get too crazy when kept in. Even though they do not do much running, as there is about 10 inches of snow on the ground As long, as the wind is not blowing too much and not a real wet snow. We have had sunshine for the last two days and thats a real treat. I am going to get a round bale to put out for them.

We have a heat tape on our water hydrant in the barn, so far, so good. It would be such a pain to haul water.

Bob and I were talking about the weather over coffee this morning. Tomorrow marks 30 days that the snow has been sitting in our yard.

Our horses are going crazy with it, they’ve eaten three wood posts out of boredom. The llama and the goat have a path worn between their house and the fence where their water is and where they get fed.

My niece in the Florida panhandle was talking about the very cold temps and the frozen pipes at her house. I just can’t imagine how heartbreaking it must be for citrus growers to watch their orchards die. I’m guessing a lot of the regular landscape plants won’t make it through the cold temps either.

Bob finally got our faucet at the water troughs thawed out and is going to put heat tape on it today. We’ve never had them freeze before.

TheHouse is one and a half floors with a full basement. The basement will be unfinished and just for storage and utility access. The upstairs has 2br and 2 baths. We weren’t going to finish it either, since there’s just the two of us, but it’s easier to get all the rough-in work done when the rest of the house is going up than to have all the mess of hauling construction materials through a finished house, so we decided to go ahead.

Well, it wasn't quite as bad as it looked. I actually wasn't standing right under them. I was just outside the drip-line, but hubby was hollering at me to move too. The big long ones that look like they're right over me were actually hanging from the ledge that he was standing under. But he was right, if any of them had fallen, as big as they were, they would probably have knocked me down when they rolled down the slope.

It looks like it’s going to be beautiful, and it looks a lot bigger than 2/2. Your room sizes must be generous. Looking forward to pictures as work progresses.

...it looks a lot bigger than 2/2...

Well, I guess I didn't say that right, the main floor has 2br and 2 baths. The upstairs/attic has 2br and 2 baths too. That's the part we probably won't finish, at least not to start with.

That makes more sense - it looks that big. I’m anxious to see it finished.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to pop on in here on this historic day of days. Scott Brown is in the senate, and I hope that this is a message that rings loud and clear to the rest of the country. It's been an exciting day, and I wanted you all to know that I played my part by voting for him! :-D ;-)

This post is mostly intended for those who aren't on facebook! Those who are, or are on the baywind forum have already heard this bit of news...

Hubby and I have reached a deal on really neat piece of property.

Wide view (North is screen-left)

Close up:

It's 19 acres total, kindof an "L" shaped property including about a third of a mile along the creek. The neighboring properties to the north and east are timber areas full of trails and logging roads to ride... And previous owners have made and tended paths and trails long the creek and in the woods, with bridges over the little streams that flow down into the creek. In the fall, there is a salmon run on the creek. It's a little like owning our own private park.

We have loan prequalification and a great loan officer pulling for us, the inspection is tomorrow on the house. The house is a bit dated, and we'll need to do some work to freshen it up... new paint and carpet, but we just couldn't be more proud and excited about this great find.

How Wonderful for you two!! Congrats! I can't see the pictures, but I bet it is awesome and a dream come true.

I did see that you were selling your "storm home" on Baywind, but didn't see the thread about the property. My pc crashed and was down for a week and I got behind on everything.

Good luck on the inspection and the load. I will be pulling for you.

I do have a Facebook page. lol
