This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Wow, that’s a gorgeous barn.
We bought Bay a new blanket couple days ago... his were getting kinda thin. We took a picture while it was still clean. ;~)
Have you been doing any riding? It's cold and snowing here also. Not much, just a little dusting.
Quite a bit of snow you have there. We had a few inches last week, but on Christmas day, it was 35 and rained, so it all melted.
Everything has been pretty quiet here. Too cold to do anything with the horses, except feed and clean stalls.
That’s Tuffy in the picture. Janelle jury rigged some ropes to a boat sled to take her grandchildren for a sleigh ride.
We got 14 inches out here two weeks ago and it’s still here. We had record breaking cold - minus 18’ and our highs haven’t gotten out of the thirties so no melting to speak of. We got a couple more storms but not a lot of snow, just an inch or so on top of what we already have.
A neighbor lost a four year old horse the night it went to minus 18. We have never heard of a horse dying of the cold but when the rendering company came out to pick it up, they said they had gotten a lot of calls from our valley. Really strange. We’ve gotten a lot of dead birds, including a big owl. And of course, frozen pipes and drainage pipes.
Have I mentioned I hate winter? :) May you have a blessed new year.
The snow came last night with a few inches. Tonight, we are suppose to get up to 6 inches more. I get supplied up and stay in most of the winter. Only going out to feed and to the store if I run out of stuff.
Did Janelle do any breeding with Tuffy this year? He sure is a beauty. How is the rest of your herd doing?
Stay warm and safe with the additional snow coming. I was talking to my neighbor across the street yesterday and she’s had to put two blankets on her horse to keep him from shivering. Right now, ours are still without blankets. Very wooly and they make sure to keep dry. They probably have an inch of dirt on them too. Bob keeps a real close eye on them, especially since Mandy lost the one.
Tuffy was bred to two mares this year. One is a red roan spotted mare (looks alot like Dusty Rose) and the other is a perlino appaloosa. She has had three foals, one palomino and two buckskin. No color and bred to Tuffy’s sire all three times. We are hoping for a loud palomino or buckskin - big blanket or spots.
We are down to five horses, Prez, Indy, Lace, CJ and Friday. Right now, they are just getting fed - no work. It’s way too cold and exhausting in the snow.
We got about 6 inches of snow yesterday, but the sun is shining brightly now. That is a welcome in the winter. Usually, it is really dreary here. The high amount of cloudy days in this area, is one of the reasons the govt. built the big arsenal during WWII, not too far from here. It is defunct now and a haven for a large herd of deer. They do allow hunts there and I thought, what a great place it would be to ride.
My friend, Judy who has the Appaloosas, has not done much showing with them this year. She and her husband both are retired from GM and have lost a lot of benefits. That put a lot of burden on their finances. They have been trying to sell a few, but no luck so far.
Their trainer went to the World Show and said that the sale horses were selling at very low prices, even for champions. The last sale we went to, some horse didn't get a $50 bid!
The sunshine sure does help doesn’t it? Thick fog here this am so a long slow drive into work.
The horse economy out here is terrible. Horses can’t even be given away right now. I’m sorry for Judy and her husband - taking a hit on income at retirement is awful. I don’t know if she knows Black Horse Ranch here in Nevada. The lady that owns it has terminal cancer and is selling all of her horses at bargain basement prices. She’s the one who has The Quest.
I’ve been worried about three batchlor stallions that have been hanging out in our neighborhood for over a year. One is badly coon footed, one seems to be a mustang adopted and then turned loose again, and the leader is a big blaze faced bay that seems to take care of the other two. I saw the tracks of the crippled one after our 12” of snow and minus 18’ temps, going down the fence lines trying to find a way into a yard, any yard it seems here on the street. I ended up crying and asking God to watch over the three and keep them safe. Found out yesterday that someone I know has put out a heated water trough for them and is feeding them hay. And the three have become four - Blaze has adopted a little mare that was hit by a car. She and her filly were hit, the filly had a broken leg and had to be put down but it looks like the mare will be okay. Anyway, very cool answer to a prayer I think.
There was a report, that 4 horses were found dead and 5 others, including a donkey and pony were in very poor shape. This was in Southeast Ohio. Just a few weeks ago, 9 more horses were rescued from a farm near here. What makes it so sad, is that so many people had called the Humane Society and nothing was done for so long.
I hope you and your family have a very Happy New Year!
Beaker it was great to hear from you again. I'm glad that Poland was fun and hope that you get to go to Japan too. That would be really interesting. Also glad to hear that you and TheFellow are still doing well. It's nice to have someone who really gets you.
Duchess, I love the sledding pic! So cool! But I'll hope for you that you don't get any more snow coz I know how much you hate it.
MT, you hang in there too. I hate cold, cloudy winter days so I'll wish some of my sunshine up your way. It's been pretty nice down here so far this winter, aside from raining every 3 or 4 days, which makes house construction veeeeery sloooooow, but it's coming along. It's supposed to be down in the teens at night for the next several days, and not much above freezing during the day, so I'm not looking forward to that, but at least it's supposed to be dry, and I'm really thankful for that, but I sure am glad I bought that stock tank heater a few years ago. It makes life with horses SO much easier!
Now, for a few pics, since nobody has posted any for a while...
These were taken at our last little weekend trip to Many Cedars Horse Camp in Hoenwald, TN, back about the 3rd week in October...
BladeRider on Blade, HaveFaith on Spec and me on Hope...
Our 4th Stooge and cameraman, Rhett, on Spot...
Blade decided he needed to read the map, since we clearly didn't know what we were doing...
Hope and I sharing a little downtime...
Blade trying to tell me that break-time was OVER...
Hope was perfectly happy for me to stay down there, so long as she got to keep eating...
Rhett discovered this technique and it turned out pretty cool, but the first time I saw it I about fell out of my chair. It makes me dizzy!...
And a Happy and Prosperous New Year to All!!
Hi to all! Frog, great house... good to see pics! Miss having you guys all around!
Are any of you on facebook too? Look me up if so... I went in kicking and screaming, but it is a good way to stay in touch.
Loved the fall pictures. I can't wait to get on and ride again.
Loved the setting for the house. Lots of trees and it looks like its going to be a beautiful home. Is that an attached garage to the left or a barn? How exciting for you.
No, I have never gotten around to getting on Facebook, but I will check you out. :)
Yeah, I’ve got a Facebook account, but I very seldom go there. I mostly set it up because my sister-in-law was posting kid pictures there. I’ll have to go look you up though.
That's going to be an open carport, because every enclosed garage I've ever seen has ended up being a junk room and you couldn't even park your car in there. But knowing my luck, and my husband's propensity towards being a packrat, that'll probably happen with the carport too, but I'm going to fight it tooth and toenail. We'll probably build a detached garage later on, but that'll be after we build the barn. My husband is just amazed that we're building the HOUSE first. ;o)
