FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Previous threads:

Jody, the Arabian. She is really doing well. She is getting used to the scary logs and even the cars didn’t spook her after a bit. Even though she needs a reset, she didn’t trip as much. She is starting to pay attention a lot more. One stupid girl went flying past and even blew her horn. I swear, if I had a gun, she would have had her tires shot out.

Thanks:)

I’ve not run into problems at horse camps around here with markers being gone, that would create major problems...yikes.

I have a good map of one of the horse camps, but it doesn’t give mileage. The other camp I like going to I don’t have a map, but it is fences all around it, and I’ve rode the perimeter, and it’s about 5-6 hours if you walk it. So at least there I’m pretty sure of not getting too lost:) I’ve rode it often but always with a friend who knows the trails well.

Amy bought her at 8 months of age for $200. She was a rescue of sorts. We could have bought 5 of them for $1800. All Arabians, but she was the nicest one. I paid for the training and now her shoing and vet bills. When they moved to Florida a few years ago, I supported her, so I guess she is a "family" horse.

I am going to go finished unpacking and wash the trailer. It would wear me out to do this every weekend. :)

At one point, I wanted to just shut down in this church parking lot and call for the trailer. Amy didn’t agree with that.. lol I just wanted off that road and that horse!

LOL< I can relate! My husband and I are directionaly challenged and we always get lost. Last month we got lost and were on horseback 8 hours. Way to long to be in the saddle.

You know the lady we are talking to that has the horse with possibly sore feet. Read this thread, mainly her last post....I’m sorry, the horse is probably sore, but I don’t think that’s the only problem.

Oh I’m sure you’re right it’s not the ONLY problem ;~)

But I think it’s the most important one right now. No matter what else is going on, when the horse hurts, you have to stop.

I agree...but I still wonder how much “pain” the horse is really in, and how much is just stubbornness.

I don’t know... but if the horse hasn’t been trimmed all summer, part of that ‘stubbornness’ and laziness the poster reports could also be lameness and she just doesn’t know enough to know it. She’s been riding this horse all over who “hasn’t had a trim all summer”. Who knows what the horse’s feet look like, or the rest of her animal husbandry, for that matter.

Did you see her last post....she saw the horse running this morning with no problem.

I agree with everything you are saying, there is no doubt the horse is probably sore and she needs to leave him alone till it clears up, but sore or not she should be able to lead him!!!

I swear, I grit my teeth and groan every time someone makes statements like “I’m never putting a bit in my horses mouth”.....all I can do to not put my fist thru the screen:) And I’ve come to hate the word “natural”....

Yeah - me too. That’s why I commented on the trainer trust issue. Fearing that someone might be mean to your horsie, yet thinking nothing of working a horse that’s lame. The cruelty you can see versus the cruelty you can’t see.

I posted the picture of Bay running today over in the horse forum too.... but thought I'd post it here... first time I've seen him run since the shoes were pulled. He was good out in the grass... came to an abrupt halt when he hit the paddock... slippery, hard, rocks, I don't know. But at least he exercised a little.

Keeping his feet dry is a loss today, but I did get them cleaned and treated with the HP.

Picture of poor Cyn laying on her breakfast for want of a soft spot. I don't have any bedding in there at all right now, just the mats. I've been leaving it pretty bare and they've been napping outside, mostly, till it was wet this morning.

Now for some breakfast and stall cleaning. They spent much of the night inside and the leanto is a mess.

I saw the picture on the HF. He looks great:)

I ran out and got a little mowing done between rain falls. I’m so thrilled at all the grass I see growing out there. I’m so tempted to go ahead and bring some of the round bales home that I bought, and get the horses off the pasture for the rest of the summer. I’m wondering if with a good start like that, I’d be further along next spring. I’m just wanting my bales to last as long into next summer as they can...not sure which is the best approach. My plan is bringing them right before you all come, and after that keep them in their runs till next year, with maybe an occasional romp out.

Read her latest post. I don’t want to appear to pick on this lady:), I’ve given my opinion once, but I would like to see how you would answer her latest question:) It just sounds to me that if the horse gets sulky with her, she stops what she is asking for. Maybe I’m reading her posts wrong:), but in my opinion that shows a lack of respect, and that she is teaching the horse to not respect her.

LOL...OK, I see you’ve already answered. Good response, but I am wondering how you tell a person how to tell if the horse respects them. Would you say this horse respects her from what she has said so far?

Wow MT, that sounds like quite the weekend. Who was riding Biscuit when she tripped and fell? Yikes.

I have no idea what to say to her.

It’s like the WhiteDress chick who posts thread after thread about trying to lead her horse around. You can’t teach someone how to be a horseman by forum.

I don’t understand that Whitedress gal either, or how she even managed to get her hands on those horses. It’s people like that (Well most of the forum really) who I just want to shout “Get a Brain!” at. I’ve only posted a handful of posts since I’ve joined, and I’ve been trying like mad to avoid that Walking gal.

Well that’s true.

I guess with this lady I have the impression because of all her talk about natural training, and no bits, that she wants to be friends with the horsie. It’s such a hard concept to learn for some that you can be the “master” but still be friends for want of a better work.
