Last season was a body blow for all the Big East detractors who felt the league had no business getting a highly-coveted automatic BCS bowl berth. Almost half of the conferences members finished the season ranked in the top 12 and it left a lasting off-season impression with a 5-0 bowl record. With the returns of Heisman contenders Brian Brohm, Steve Slaton, Pat White and Ray Rice, prepare for an encore performance.
Forget all the talk about the demise of the Big East. Its over, as long as no more schools bolt for greener pastures. The league has two budding national powers in West Virginia and Louisville, two programsRutgers and South Floridawith enormous upsides, a second division thatll be more competitive and a wicked head of steam.
The Mountaineers and Cardinals are once again the heavy favorites to win the league and contend as trendy picks to be the fly in the national title game ointment. While both offenses will be unstoppable, the development of their defenses will determine just how far they go.

I saw that you were from VA, that’s why my guess was VT. If I hadn’t looked at your page my guess would have been Pitt. This year IIRC is the 100th Backyard Brawl.
“The SEC is the top conference, no doubt, but weve done pretty well against them...just as Georgia (2006 Sugar Bowl), and Mississippi (2000 Music City Bowl).
...right, and I’ll also ask Florida and S.C. about the Sugar and Carquest Bowls.”
See what I mean? You have to go back 13-14 years to the last century to find any success against us. Probably the funniest thing I remember about the 2006 Sugar Bowl is reading all of the arrogant comments by the Georgia fans preceding it and all of the shots of the stunned and crying Gerogia fans during the game.
Wait a minute! I just saw Greg Blue go running past my window! He’s still chasing Steve Slaton!!
i am originally from southwestern PA and most kids in my HS class went to Pitt, Penn State or WVU for college.
I’m from NYC and between the Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants and Rangers, college football wasn’t on my radar. Besides, in Fun City, ND is the home team.(or at least it used to be...subway alumni and all that)
I done my time in football hell, and await my national championship reward. Not this year, probably, but soon.
You should see the monsters we're recruiting, like 6-foot-8, 305-pound offensive tackle Art Forst, who just cancelled recruiting visits to Florida and Notre Dame, because he didnt want to string them along.
"Basically I didn't want to waste the University of Florida's and Notre Dame's time anymore," said Forst, "Honestly, I didn't see myself at any school other than Rutgers.
He'll be the second biggest guy on the O Line, when he plays next to incoming freshman Anthony Davis. Life is good on the banks of the old Raritan, these days.
Check this out, it's funny as hell (adult language alert! no kiddies!):
Big East Mascots preview the upcoming season Part 1
Big East Mascots preview the upcoming season Part 2
Pittsburghers split allegiance between the “Stillers” and the college teams of their choice, i guess. my hub is from upstate NY so there ain’t NUTHIN’ but SU up there! no pro anything!
OMG i love that!
Here’s some Mountaineer trivia for you.
Doug Flutie was the QB at Boston College 1981-1984 and won the Heisman in ‘84. As QB for BC he faced the West Virginia (Mountain)’eers 4 times and was beaten everytime.
Ha ha, great work!!
That wasn't the one they were proposing to build in Manhattan to lure the 2012 Olympics to New York, was it?
Thanks. My buddy’s a BIG fan...gotta see where I can fit that into a conversation. ;^)
Okay, since there’s a big huge movement and all to get the SEC Preview posted, I’m going to have this go something like this...Tomorrow, I’ll get the Big 10+1, Friday I’ll take a look-see at the Pac-10, then I have to work graveyard this weekend, so we’re looking at Monday as the big day.
I’m also going to do an Official Mid-Major Preseason Thread sometime next week, since if you bothered to look at my profile page, I’m a fan of one of those “miscellaneous” schools you can’t watch on TV. It’s like a college football Festivus...For the rest of us!
So get your photoshopped pics, WoooPigSooie’s, War Eagles, and a good bottle of bourbon or something. We’ll Git R Done on Monday.
Just don’t talk about anybody’s mama, okay? Unless it’s Mitch Mustain’s mama and then...well, you’re on your own there.
No..that was for the Jets..on the West side of Manhattan..but that was never gonna pass. The Jets and Giants are now jointly building a HUGE complex..right near the site of the present Giants stadium..it’s supposed to cost $900 mill..but will NOT have a dome..and the two teams will be equal partners, unlike the present arrangement..
Wow, you’d think at a cost of 900 million, they’d at least install a retractable roof.
And it would have been a great excuse to blow the UN Building into the East River. :)
The underlined might need a little explaining for those of us who aren't West Virginians...please. :)
Mountaineers have a long tradition of setting street fires, often with cheap furniture dragged from their rental homes
Ah. Have any Mountaineers decided to burn the Robert C. Byrd Memorial Couch, because I’d like to donate some lighter fluid for that. ;)
