Xer Ping

Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

I remember Willow - my then-girlfriend had to keep nudging me to keep me from snoring too loudly.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've seen almost all of these films -- with the exception of Beastmaster, Sword and Sworcerer, Neverending Story and Willow.

I don't think I'll ever be able to see Neverending Story at this point -- I don't think it could live up to the Family Guy gag, with Peter flying on the dragon. Once you've seen that, how could you ever watch the original film with a straight(ish) face?

A few years back I made a list of my one hundred favorite movies;
had to stop at around a hundred and fifty.
Just under half of these made it (and I'm not even 'Gen-X')
Some of the titles posted in response to the article also made it - Zardoz in particular.

If you go back further you would find several hercules movies staring Steve reeves, also the Sinbad series. By todays standards they are hokey but in their time they were quite good.

but those of the only decade in history in which they could have been produced - the over-the-top excessive 1980s.

I'm confused, was this some thinly-veiled attempt to blame Reagan for these movies?

Excalibur (1981)
Flesh+Blood (1985)
Hawk the Slayer (1980)
LadyHawke (1985)
Lionheart (1987)
Red Sonja (1985)
Sword of the Valiant: The Legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (1984) — the greatest movie of this genre. I can’t believe they missed it. Sean Connery as The Green Knight is so great.
The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey (1988)

It's inconceivable that "Princess Bride" is not on the list.

I know--talkative. But, as you wish.

Fantasy has to win the award for Worst Genre. There are SO many bad fantasy films, and very few great ones.

In terms of mythological fantasy, Clash of the Titans had some OK sets but was weak, Dragonslayer has great dragon scenes but is overrated for trying to be a revisionist fantasy, Time Bandits is a very entertaining (and dark) Terry Gilliam movie, Conan the Barbarian is one of those mixtures of great stuff and cheese that is just SO entertaining, Beastmaster is fine if you're a homosexual who digs half-naked guys who look like aliens, Sword and the Sorcerer was just gawdawful and boring, Krull is one of those movies that has so many bits stolen from other movies that you can practically see the stitiching holding this mess together, The Neverending Story deserves to be considered a children's classic, Legend was a mistake from the start (the original script was more epic and darker) made worse by jettisoning Jerry Goldsmith's great musical score and hacking scenes out and Willow is colorful garbage.

Conan, Krull, the European cut of Legend,Beastmaster and Willow all have terrific scores, though.
