The wife of an Alabama minister missing for more than four months has been located by police unharmed and working under an alias at a fast-food restaurant in New York state, authorities said Monday.
Louisiana police located Mary Byrne Smith alive and well in New York state on Friday. The 30-year-old kindergarten teacher had been working under an assumed name at a fast-food restaurant.
"We know its her," Bossier City Police Chief Mike Halphen said at a press conference Monday. "She did not want us to disclose the reasons why she left, and she did not want us to disclose where she is living."
She does not face criminal charges, he said.
"People have their reasons for wanting to start a new life and that was her choosing," Halphen said. "And again, we encouraged her very, very hard to contact her family and at least talk with her children and we believe that she will."

Perhaps she feared she was a threat to her children.
This person should spend time in jail.
_______
on what charge? What law did she break?
She may be a whack job...or a scumbag....or there could be something going on that we're unaware of.At least nobody's dead and that sadness and anxiety appears to be all that resulted from her act so far.
Some of these women need to consider whether or not they’re cut out for this life before they go into it.
In some areas of rural upstate NY a fast food job is a good job.
They more or less said that after she hocked the wedding ring...she asked how far it would get her and the guy said something like “New York City”...more or less as a joke. Riding Greyhound would probably cost you $120 to get up to NYC.
Families have obligations. They have bills and obligations to provide care for the children. This person walked out on all such obligations. If it were the man you can bet he would be hauled back to town to appear in court. There he would be ordered to make financial contributions to support the children as well as the spouse.
It could not have escaped this woman that a huge outlay of local, state and federal dollars were expended in the search for her. A simple phone call could have ended this.
I believe there are a number of legal issues this woman should be facing.
May HE was the nutcase an she just got fed up.......
I couldn’t agree more.
True, she didn’t kill anyone, but responsibility is’t a multiple choice thing. If she wanted or needed out, she should have had the decency to sit down with them and tell them.
Let’s not forget the added torment she heaped on them by causing them to worry about her - needlessly!
As a man, try using that argument if you abandon your wife and children.
Good luck.
I agree with you. if this were the man he would be jailed for not paying child support or abandonment. But she’s probably been abused or treated unfairly by someone somewhere so its ok.
You are correct. I made a bad assumption.
At least she didn't leave bodies behind.
I know you didn’t ask me, but she’s a teacher and they found her when she applied for certification in NY.
We can’t know what’s really going on here. I can think of one scenario that exonerates her, but it’s just guesswork:
Her husband’s a control freak who told her she can’t survive without him, and if she tried she’d be cleaning toilets at McDonalds for the rest of her life. So she chose that over him, with a plan to save up enough money to go back and get the kids -— if they’re not utterly controlled.
She figured she’d work rather than go on welfare, because welfare doesn’t help you get the kids away from the control freak husband. In fact they would send him a bill and tell him exactly where to find her.
But...that’s just guesswork. She could be an irresponsible wretch devoid of all virtue.
Yep, I can hear it all now...
Which one, her are the preacher????
Which one, her are the preacher????
My kid is grown, so I might get away with it!........
