In Times Square, ...visitors to 345 West 42nd Street are reveling...

In “The Simpsons,”...Kwik-E-Mart is a barely disguised 7-Eleven whose Indian owner changes the expiration dates on spoiled food, worships at a shrine for the elephant god Ganesha and is under constant siege by armed robbers.

Far from shrinking from the image, 7-Eleven has embraced its inner Kwik-E-Mart...

Andy Chaudhari (pronounced CHOW-dree), the 7-Eleven franchise owner on 42nd Street, is elated. He said he had received scores of daily telephone calls about Buzz Cola, Sprinklicious doughnuts,

In Mr. Chaudhari’s store, boxes of Frosted KrustyO’s cereal note that they have “20 percent more air!” An image of Jasper Beardley, an older citizen of the fictional Springfield with a waist-long beard, is frozen in mistaken suspended animation in the Kwik-E-Mart freezer, as in a “Simpsons” episode.

The A.T.M. is run by the “First Bank of Springfield,” whose slogan is “Misplacing Decimal Points Since 194.5.” Several signs over sandwiches and other goods proclaim, “Buy 3 for the Price of 3.”

Of all the figures in the store, however, by far the most popular is Kwik-E-Mart’s unscrupulous proprietor, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon...

After 18 years and more than 400 episodes, “The Simpsons” has become America’s new Don Rickles. It is a drive-by satirizer of Christians, Jews, old people, police chiefs, groundskeepers, schoolteachers, doctors and the nuclear power industry.

But Apu has “always grated on me,” said Manish Vij, 34, a blogger at ultrabrown.com, which has links to other Apu critics.

...

For Mr. Chaudhari, the 7-Eleven owner, said the dispute seemed overblown. “You cannot take everything to heart,” he said.

Good question. Although in some states, supermarkets and delis can’t sell beer they can in NY State, so it was interesting that there was no mention of Homer’s beloved Duff in the article.

Sounds like communism to me!

No beer,... there ought to be a law.

All Kwik-E-Marts MUST sell beer!
