GAINESVILLE - A teenager who needed 900 stitches after her family's pit bull attacked her is recovering at home.

Amanda Boyles, 19, of Interlachen, suffered facial lacerations and a damaged artery that required surgery after the dog lunged at her face while they were playing Thursday.

Deputies said the woman's father, Felton Boyles, pried the dog off his daughter at it shook her head back and forth in its grip.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Pit bulls are completely unreliable and unpredictable. They can seem sweet and docile for years and then turn on their owners or others in a flash. A woman who lived in a community north of Houston owned several pit bulls for years and called them her babies. She was found dead after her “babies” killed her. Some breeds are just more aggressive by nature, and pit bulls have to be at the top of the list.

If there was a Michael Vick there to own that dog, this would have never have happened. Dog fighters keep dangerous dogs out of untrained hands and are a net benefit to society so little kids and old lady's dont get bit up...

(One caller said this on 790 the zone, a doglanta sport talk station.)

Correction on “child.” My eyes must be going, I thought it read 14.

More often then not it is pit bulls involved in these attacks, or perhaps they just get reported more often then other breeds. I am sure we will hear from the usual people who will say that pitbulls make "lovely pets", are "great with kids" and "it is how they are trained, not the breed."

Never trust a pit bull when the owner is sporting a mulllet or Fullett.

900 stitches. This is one of the main points that separate a pit attack apart from other breeds, the consistent ferocity with which they ‘snap’.

I heard a caller to a radio show up here say that people who attended the Vick-related dog fights are no different than people who attend the Kentucky Derby.

Even a Chihuahua will bite. But they don’t do massive damage before they say “Oops” and back off.

I know one guy with a pit bull. While playing with the dog, it aggressively lunged at him and growled — I saw fear in the guy’s eyes.

I don’t think that even a well-trained and socialized pit bull is a smart family pet.

There's a reason people don't keep hyenas and tigers as pets (not legally, anyway). If such animals have even a momentary lapse of control and attack their handlers, the results can be devastating. As this poor young woman is finding out, there's no way to unring that bell.

I'm sure the owner loved his "sweet baby" pit bull before this attack, and would have defended it against anyone concerned that it might prove dangerous. But in his foolishness, he allowed his real baby to be mauled, which will change her life forever.

“Pit bulls are completely unreliable and unpredictable.”

Yet, you don’t believe this statement when it is made about Palentinian terrorists.

Crazy. Must have been a dog-fighting fan.

I was surprised to find here some posters who started to ridicule those who spoke out against dog fighting. When Senator Byrd echoed my sentiments and called it barbaric, several called him a hypocrite, apparently alluding that he supports dog fighting.

Anyone who supports dog fighting has to be a sadist and those who take their children to watch should be charged with child abuse.

Not entirely correct. Especially in urban areas, dog fighters will distribute their dogs among family and friends many of whom are unsuspecting and just think they are keeping a 2nd cousins pet dog because his landlord told him he can't have it in the apartment.

“What a bizarre comment.”

Not at all. Have you forgotten the thread where you repeatedly called for “treatment” for a Palestinian terrorist whose suicide bomb attempt wasn’t successful? You were all upset that the terrorist lost his leg becasue the IDF wasn’t “humane enough.”

I am only making a logical connection between your comment on pit bulls and their “unpredictable” nature and Palentinians (who exhibit very similar behavior).

“””The 2-year-old white pit bull.””

It is not stated whether the Boyles had the dog as a puppy, or if it was perhaps an older, rescued ‘shelter’ dog.

I adopted an adult small ‘biting’ dog from a shelter that had been surrendered by prior owners. No telling what kind of training or treatment baggage they carry with them, any breed, any size, any age...it is very distressing.

IMHO, the AKC bears some responsibility for issuing ‘papers’ on any and all breeds - when some breeders should be closely monitored - eliminating ‘puppy mills’ and bad genetic traits.

Only 2 good reasons to own a pit bull. 1) You need to protect a meth lab. 2) You are in the dog fighting industry.

Pit bulls aside. When I lived in Florida, I had a German Shepherd. It was the type of dog that people unfamiliar with him would immediately ask "Is he friendly?" He was.

Anyway, to current times, my brother owns a lhasa-apso which is about the size of my foot. The dog is borderline psychotic, my opinion, for any visitor to the house. He barks constantly and will even growl at your every move. The breed is very territorial and tempermental by nature from what I have read. I'll take my Shepherd anyday :-)

Yes, but he was such a good dog. I don’t know what caused him to do this.

There actually is one legitimate use for them, i.e. hog hunting. Think we might could close some of the culture gap by turning wild hogs loose in the ghettos?? I mean, that would give them the legit use for their pit bulls....

There are good dog owners.
There are good dogs.
There are bad dog owners.
There are bad dogs.

Good owners and good dogs - that works.

Bad owners and good dogs - may work.

Good owners and bad dogs - may not work.

Bad owners and bad dogs - never works!
