Pope: Creation vs. evolution clash an ‘absurdity’
MSNBC ^ | 7/24/2007

Pope Benedict XVI said the debate raging in some countries — particularly the United States and his native Germany — between creationism and evolution was an “absurdity,” saying that evolution can coexist with faith.

The pontiff, speaking as he was concluding his holiday in northern Italy, also said that while there is much scientific proof to support evolution, the theory could not exclude a role by God.

“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other,” the pope said. “This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

He said evolution did not answer all the questions: “Above all it does not answer the great philosophical question, ‘Where does everything come from?’”

Benedict also said the human race must listen to “the voice of the Earth” or risk destroying its very existence.

t must be a great feeling to feel spiritual superiority over your fellow Christians.

It must be, it seems to be a common manifestation.

... not at all proven that dogs become horses, or rodents elephants ...

And not at all claimed, either. Clearly you have read little or nothing in the way of paleontolgy.

I have. I'm a Christian who believes that evolution IS intelligent design and that the Bible is key to the survival of our species. God works His wonders in strange and mysterious ways.

Here’s one for you.

Anyone who echoes the fundamentalists perview of THE BIBLE IS ENTIRE LITERAL ignores one basic fact. They deny the fact that Bible has been written and translated by people. People who were inspired and directed by God, but men none the less. Now while GOD has purity of motive, men tend to the sinful. People have chosen what goes in the bible and what has not over the years.

So given the choice of worshipping a book written through the ages by people or the spirit of God that the Bible represents, I will take the spirit of god.

Science and Religion are opposite sides of the same coin. Both the scientist and theologian are searching for the answers to the mysteries that God has created.

Really - what is the voice of the earth? No where in God’s Word does it say listen to any other voice but HIS - and His sheep do hear His voice. In fact, He warns against listening to another voice. “In the last days, even the most elect will be deceived. I’ll follow my Creator and His Word and never what man ‘thinks’.

"Benedict also said the human race must listen to “the voice of the Earth” or risk destroying its very existence."

"This obedience to the voice of the Earth is more important for our future happiness ... than the desires of the moment. Our Earth is talking to us and we must listen to it and decipher its message if we want to survive,” he said."

Excuse me Mr. Pope but I said before when you said the "Catholic chuch is the only true church", that you were nuts. Now you are saying this about the " Voice of the earth". ? Good grief!

All I can say is I am more blessed every day to be a Christian and not a Catholic, and this is just more proof of why. Just a suggestion, but maybe his people, the followers of his religion should pray for him to come to his senses.

Just as in some Religions, Science has been hijacked by those who wish to undermine Religion. If I am to be in error, I will err on the right side with the Lord and believe his word until he himself demonstrates certain facts when I see him.

I’m not sure what you are saying. Darwinists will claim that all life evolved through natural selection from single celled organisms, but not be able to show a gradual transition of any creature into a wholly different one. Something big is missing in the theory, imo.

“Does that include the atheists who accept evolution?”

Yes. Atheism is a belief system.

“Or are you just parroting the anti-science people who think that by labeling science a religion it somehow makes their religion valid?”

?????? Complicated sentence structure. I believe in God, the Bible and evolution. I don’t necessarily see a conflict in them.

But the rest of you are free to not belong or not listen at all. Why would you even care to comment on him?

Surely all who belong to Christ are welcome to comment on the man who claims to be the chosen head of Christ's church on earth.

We do all believe in Jesus Christ, do we not?

Yes, but not purgatory. And we believe God's Word and not man's word no matter who the man claims to be. Jesus is the head of the church, He's the bridegroom, the church is His bride.

Exactly when did Jesus say to take literally the Bible that was to be composed decades after his death? Jews don’t even treat the 7 (6) days of Creation as a traditional calendar week, and Genesis is their intellectual property.

The fact that God created creatures that can adapt and evolve in this world are not mutually exclusive.

Evolve into what?

"The Catholic Church has a tradition of giving mere lip service to the Bible, and not getting their medieval superstitions and traditions get in the way of a good book."

Your assertion is either an opinion or a conclusion. If it is an opinion please cite your qualifications and credentials so that we may gage your utterances somewhere between brilliance and bovine scat. If is is a conclusion please cite your references.

When you examine his statements in full context, understanding that he approaches things as a scholar and theologian, they are usually relatively mild. But he has to be world’s worst populator communicator. He’s like an anti-Reagan.

He doesn’t seem to have a clue as to how he comes across to non-scholars and non-theologians.

I have always believed that there is not, nor can there ever be, a contradiction between science and God. The same God that gave us the 10 Commandments is the same God that designed the DNA molecule. All are His works. Where a contradiction appears it is only because of gaps in our knowledge and understanding.
