Tell the NFL to Suspend Michael Vick! NFL star Michael Vick, of the Atlanta Falcons, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on felony dogfighting charges. Vick is charged with violating federal laws against competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines.
In a raid conducted on April 25 and 26, local and state law enforcement officials found 70 dogsincluding at least 60 pit bulls and many dogs who reportedly were neglected, scarred, and malnourishedon quarterback Vick's rural Surry County, Virginia, property. Some of the animals evidently bear scars and injuries, and paraphernalia commonly associated with dogfightingincluding a "rape stand"are also said to have been found on the property.
Humane officers and other law enforcement officials routinely break up illegal dogfighting rings and confiscate dogfighting paraphernalia, including treadmills used to build the dogs' endurance and drugs used either to numb pain caused by injuries or to "jazz up" the dogs. According to Vick's indictment, even if the losing dogs survived, they met a cruel fate, "sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution, or some other method."
The professional sports world is plagued with players who have been accused, charged, or convicted of cruelty to animals, abusing pit bulls, and dogfighting, and we hope that this indictment sends a loud and clear message to players and the NFL that celebrity is not a sufficient excuse for breaking the law and that animal abuse should never be tolerated under any circumstances.
We need your help to tell the NFL that someone who allows this kind of neglect and abuse to occur doesn't belong in its organization. Please write to the NFL to ask that Vick be immediately suspended.

OK, everyone knows that PETA is completely anti-human and totally insane, but, in the case of Michael Vick, they are close to right. Michael Vick is a dirtbag, and no amount of football money can change that. When American sportsfans return to a committment to actual sports and sportsmanship, the likes of Michael Vick will be gone for good. I almost pray for the day.
Concur. I suspect also that the league will wnat to find out if any of the other guys have rolled over on Vick...copped a plea..which will make it far easier to wash their hands of him..Nike has already cut out..
Nike bailed? Last I saw (late this morning) Nike was still hovering. If the crimes weren’t so vile I might actually feel sorry for Vick.
Yup.
I certainly think the Falcons will give it a try (waiting for the League), but I think that the League has painted itself in a corner on this one with the Players Union (by the 'prior offender agreement). Expecting Gene Upshaw to 'play ball' on this one will be a tough sell with all the bad Press he's been getting lately.
If that drug charge had stuck to Vick last year we wouldn't be talking about this right now -- he'd already be gone.
Agreed.
However, I don’t want the baseborn suspended. I want his sorry afterburners FIRED.
WTF is a “rape stand”????????
Even a broken clock is right twice a day...
Ron Mexico deserves his day in court.
Who in hell changed the Constitution to guilty until proven innocent? Bunch of Nazi’s.

The cruel execution of losing dogs is what probably truly bothers me.
I knew somebody would pitch that back at me.
Scooter Libby.
I’ve seen dogs fight naturally all my life. I grew up in a time before leash laws when big male territorial dogs roamed and fought...and we watched as kids until some dad would throw water on the dogs
and dogs sometimes got killed....it’s the nature of some dogs..not that I condone dog fighting for sport-gambling...I don’t
but neither do I think it’s a capital crime.
i will admit that it bothers me a bit that the fixation on animal cruelty often carries more emotive weight than what we do to each other and to the innocent
our culture is at an all time low and folks tolerate all sorts of horrors from endemic crime in our cities, illegitimacy that has decimated some sectors, slutty women and irresponsible men, decaying schools populated with parentless feral kids...etc
but yet....everyone goes bonkers over animal cruelty ....which bad as it is , is not equivocable with other far worse things we tolerate...it seems like folks get really riled over animal stuff because it strikes an emotive chord ...an emotive chord allowed to be struck but which is inconsistent
btw....Michael Vick epitomizes every reason I no longer watch much sports...for sure not the NBA or NFL anymore...thugs...which sorta goes back to my original point.
I’ll have to disagree. As much as I abhor dog fighting, and as much as I believe that Vick, if he wasn’t directly involved, had something to do with the dog fighting ring, still, in this country, a person is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty by the courts and a jury of one’s peers. He should not be punished UNTIL found guilty. The media don’t seem to get this. Over and over they convict someone in the media before the case ever gets to trial.
If he is convicted he should serve the maximum penalty the law allows, lose his NFL contract, and all the endorsements he has. Also, any property used for the dag fighting should be conficated.
But let’s wait for the guilty verdict.

Re: There is no way the NFL can let him play
Sadly, I think they will let him play.
The rules somehow do not apply to them. When people will wake up to this nonsense, I have no idea.
