Heathrow has Internet machines almost as often as they have pay phones, so at least I could send email. It cost a pound for 15 minutes. GAH!

It was. It was so bad!
I could only get to the ‘net cafe about every three days, and only for 30 minutes at a time. And I had to have a chaperone.... It wasn’t long enough to do everything that needed to be done. (My family, y’know...)

A pound for 15 MINUTES????
I did buy some time at Gatwick, some years ago, but at lower rates. Everything conspired against me on that trip -- the hotel hadn't put in their free WiFi yet (other hotels in the chain had it), the wired Internet was too expensive, the cellphone Internet pricing was too high, and I couldn't connect via the hotel-room phone.

And I had to have a chaperone.... LoM had to have one whenever she went out, the whole time she lived in Iran.

This was in 2004, so I have no clue what the cost is now.
I just got off the phone with my sister, my ex-brother-in-law and one of my neices. They are all in St. George, UT, which is two hours from here.
I haven’t seen this sister in 25 years, so I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing them all!
Since they are on the way to the reunion, I’ll stop and visit going both ways. On the way back, I’ll stay the night, just to catch up on everybody. Two of my neices are there, and one nephew, so it will be lots of fun, I think!

"I wont have time for reading material...got too many people to visit and hug a lot." You won't have time to miss Free Republic either.
Real life can sometimes be an adequate substitute for internet chatter.

Sounds like something I might say after one too many shots of Tequila. I'm guessing that's somewhere between "two tequila" and "floor," correct?

That works great with my new mouse and its magnifier feature. My mouse doesn't have a magnifier. Seems like it would be awkward, holding your mouse in front of the screen.

I advocate the use of reading material, people. Isn't that what the Internet is for, to read FR?

This was in 2004, so I have no clue what the cost is now. That's about when I was over there, I think... (checks cellphone)... yup, 7/12-16/2004. But I've noticed prices for wireless can vary rather widely from airport to airport. I *might* pay the $5 (for 24 hours, snark!) in Detroit for my 5-hour layover.
I just got off the phone...
Sounds like good family time. Spend your time with your real flesh-n-blood -- your UT friends will still be here on your return.

See? When I first had access to the Internet in '74-'75 (it was called the ARPANET then), FR was still a couple of decades in the future. I guess that's why I never used it back then.

I don’t know how good it will be. That particular sister seems to have gone out of her way to keep me from finding her kids.
Which explains why it’s been so long since I’ve seen them.
No matter. I have all I need to hunt them down!

"Why would you want to read books when you've got a perfectly good TV set right there?" -- Matilda's father, (Danny DeVito). Ack! That falls under the "cruel and unusual" prohibition in the Bill of Rights. It may not be unusual, but from personal experience it can be cruel. A relative has the TV on pretty much all day; when visiting I retreat and read (book, Internet, FR, whatever!).
(Don't know who "Matilda" or her father are, but I recognize "Danny DeVito as an actor, comedian I think -- but teeeveee or movie?)
