PLAINFIELD, Ill. — The estranged husband of a suburban Chicago woman missing for more than two months was named a "person of interest" Thursday by police investigating her disappearance.
Police had previously been reluctant to name Craig Stebic as the subject of their investigation. He was the last person to report seeing Lisa Stebic on the evening of April 30; her credit cards and cell phone have not been used since.
Plainfield Police Chief Donald Bennett said at a news conference that authorities fear that Lisa Stebic has been a victim of foul play. Police have narrowed the focus of their investigation and "now consider Craig Stebic to be a person of interest in the case," Bennett said.

The news reporter is Amy Jacobson, formerly of WMAQ-TV 5, the NBC owned station in Chicago. Cameramen from CBS owned WBBM-TV 2 filmed the incident that did in Jacobson. After Dan Rathergate, I have to take Jacobson’s side against CBS regardless of the circumstances.
When did police departments go politically correct? What’s with this “person of interest” in criminal investigations, rather than calling some a “suspect”? Was this language changed for political correctness purposes? Is the term “suspect” going to hurt someone’s feelings, because it implies certain things, whereas “person of interest” doesn’t imply anything?
It doesn't of course, but I suppose the thought process is understandable in the modern litgious age.
How is Craig Stebic employed? Is he going to work each day?
Nancy Grace guest states he should be charged with obstruction of justice for not allowing the children to answer questions about the last time they saw their mother.
Craig’s attorney has refused to allow it. His attorney should not be allowed to represent the children - they should have a guardian ad litem appointed IMHO.
Well then, if someone is ever falsely accused or suspected of something, the law enforcement agency can avoid lawsuits by saying he was just a “person of interest”, and was never suspected of anything. Interesting..........
Think about it, a person of interest could be someone who witnessed something, someone who could provide an alibi, someone who knows people involved, etc. It could mean anything.
I agree with you on the guardian. This guy has not even agreed to a polygraph.
He certainly does not act like someone who gives a whit about the mother of his kids, even if they were divorcing.
This case needs a big break and soon!

If you are just simply ‘a person of interest’ it means only that law enforcement is checking you out. After Miranda - the police are limited in everything but semantics.

Problem solved!
When you are officially named a “suspect”, you have more rights and protections against police malfeasance. This is their way of calling you the suspect without limiting their ways to trick you into making a false confession, etc.
Nobody ever should.
Even more so if you are guilty!
