Poker players from around the globe have descended on the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino for the first of four start dates at the World Series of Poker Main Event.
A total of 1,287 players kicked off the first days play. Thousands more already have paid the $10,000 buy-in for the No-Limit Texas Holdem Championship, commonly referred to as the Main Event.

This has been the best World Series of Poker in the tournaments 38-year history, said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack, and this will be the best Main Event ever.
More than $100 million in prize money already has been awarded at the 2007 World Series of Poker. This years event schedule included a total of 55 tournaments, the most in World Series of Poker history.

Freepmail me if you want on the Poker Ping List.
Any live TV coverage this year?
You can get PPV of the final table (it cost me $20). You get to see every hand (but no hole cards) and all the other stuff (breaks, ceremonies, table chat, etc). I think it starts at 3PM ET on the 17th.
I watched it last year and it was pretty interesting. They have Phil Gordon and Ali Nejad doing commentating again this year. They were good, and had about every big name in poker sit in with them for a while.
Sounds like they are improving the show this year:

Those numbers of 3000 players is a maximum, not acutal I read that just over 1200 entered in day 1a...
Here is part of todays press release from
http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/news/varchive.asp?aid=1518
“The 2007 World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukees Best Light attracted 54,288 total registrants, the most in World Series of Poker history.
The 55-event series, played at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, is now culminating with the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Holdem World Championship, commonly referred to as the Main Event. With 6,358 entries, this years Main Event is the second-largest live poker tournament ever played.”
In my opinion... if the US had not enacted the online poker ban, this year would have been more entries than last year
“Any live TV coverage this year?”
If there is, it’ll beat “Live Earth”’s ratings.
You have to show ID to register so you can’t re-register.
Lotta big names busted already. I’m trying to avoid the news, so I can watch the shows when ESPN broadcasts it, but I fear it will be 10 new-names at the final table.
