Your hunch is correct. Your cat decided to live with you, not the other way around. The sad truth is, it may not be a final decision.
But don't take this feline diffidence personally. It runs in the family. And it goes back a long way -- about 12,000 years, actually.
Those are among the inescapable conclusions of a genetic study of the origins of the domestic cat, being published today in the journal Science.
The findings, drawn from an analysis of nearly 1,000 cats around the world, suggest that the ancestors of today's tabbies, Persians and Siamese wandered into Near Eastern settlements at the dawn of agriculture. They were looking for food, not friendship.
They found what they were seeking in the form of rodents feeding on stored grain. They stayed for 12 millennia, although not without wandering off now and again to consort with their wild cousins.

Why Do Cats Hang Around Us? (Hint: They Can’t Open Cans)
Yea, and don’t think they don’t resent it, either ;’}
I didnt think they do it for the conversation......
I was sitting in my living room one time & my cat was by my chair. Suddenly, she jumped straight up in the air - I looked, and a snake was curled up by my feet! She started swiping at it & it struck at her. My husband and I both just jumped up & stood on our chairs screaming while the poor cat tried to defend her home.
Finally, my husband caught the snake & took it outside after he determined it was a rat snake. Considering I am deathly afraid of snakes - it was really hard for me to relax in my house for awhile.
I had another cat that woke me up in the middle of the night once - peeing on my stomach! Never did it before or since - I’ve always wondering what he was trying to tell me.
Piss off?
Usually, it is telling you there was something about the litter box that it didn’t like.
That's highly possible.
Who needs to open cans when you can FReep until it's time to sleep!
Every cat we ever had would come running when it heard the sound of the electric can opener! As for responding to their names being called..., maybe (reactions ranged from opening one eye to madly dashing to us depending upon the cat and its mood at the time).
“I had another cat that woke me up in the middle of the night once - peeing on my stomach! Never did it before or since - Ive always wondering what he was trying to tell me.”
LOL. Take me to The water park!
If cats only had thumbs we would be doomed..... LOL
My cat peed on me once. I was sitting in a chair out in the back yard. He came up to me, like he usually does when I'm sitting there, and then he turned around and sprayed me. He had never done anything like that before or since. The neat thing is, he hadn't peed in a few days. I had taken him to the vet and it turned out he had a urinary tract infection. He had been on his medicine for a few days. I looked at it as he was saying, "thanks for taking care of me, I'm better now."
