George McCorkle, one of the original members of legendary Spartanburg group The Marshall Tucker Band, died today at the age of 60 in a Nashville hospital of complications from cancer.
Ron Rainey, whose company represents the group, posted the following statement on the band's Web site shortly before noon:
"I just received word that George passed away at about 9:00 AM Nashville time. The entire Marshall Tucker Band Family, past and present along with the entire MTB organization are in mourning over this great loss. Please join us in prayers for he and his family."

Dance hall girls were the evenin' treat
Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street
Men were shot down for the sake of fun
Or just to hear the noise of their forty-four guns
And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there
Ah, Marshall Tucker. I went to college in NC; that band was huge there. Reminds me of my misspent youth. RIP, George.
Marshall Tucker band played for a trade show sponsored by Briggs and Stratton last summer in Louisville. McCorkle’s voice was gone at that time ... I think he had just recovered from larnyx surgery then.
The infamous flute support that characterized their music was not the original artist at the show, but I believe a nephew of McCorkle’s that was in his early 20’s. Very talented and could play any instrument on the stage.
Incidentally, I believe it was the upper managemet of Briggs and Stratton, including a President and maybe the CEO have an oldies rock band ... they performed as well and were quite good. Did a lot of oldies, Dylan and such, and later they joined with Marshall Tucker on stage... doing Heard it in Love Song. Yeah ... it was one of the best trade shows I’ve been to.
