DELTONA, Fla. -- A 63-year-old woman visiting a family member in Deltona, Fla., was killed Friday when a pet pit bull attacked her face and nearly ripped her scalp off, according to officials.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 dog attack call Friday morning from a home located at 1608 Roble Lane.

When officers arrived, they found Mary Bernal being mauled by the pit bull.

The deputies shocked the dog and Bernal was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where she later died.

The victim's sister and owner of the dog, Estela Macias, 52, was also injured in the attack. She was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford for medial treatment.

Dog owner Eliasar Macies said he did not think his pet dog was capable of killing anyone.

"This is new to me," Macies said. "(The dog) had never done this before. Never, never."

Before the attack, Bernal was attempting to pick up another dog in Macias' back yard, deputies said.

The pit bull was taken by Volusia County Animal Services and Code Enforcement.

Did she get shocked too? Does it work that way? I’m not making excuses for the dog...just wondering.

They shocked the dog. He had her by the head. I was wondering if by contact she could have been shocked too.

Yeah, there was nothing else to do though. You can’t shoot a dog if you don’t have a clear shot.

I read your profile page, and it really raised my eyebrows, until I “got it.”

Very cute!

It must have had something to do with her attempting to pick up the other dog. For some reason, that really ticked off the pit bull. Things like this are terrible.

I didn’t read the story but if by “shocked” they meant “Tazed”, in theory at least the current runs between the two darts in the, ah, subject. So if both darts hit the dog the woman would not have been shocked. Also the only stun guun I’ve ever gotten close to had two prongs and the charge ran between them, so again it’s hard to see how the woman would have been shocked.

My dog never killed anyone before. Who knew?

Dog owner Eliasar Macies said he did not think his pet dog was capable of killing anyone.

"This is new to me," Macies said. "(The dog) had never done this before. Never, never."

The owners of these dogs frequently claim that only the bad dogs who have been mistreated or somesuch are the ones who kill, but THEIR dog is cuddly and a saint and so forth.

Someone who lives nearby didn't/wouldn't/couldn't understand that her dog was going onto other folks farms and harassing livestock.

So one day he didn't come home. So it goes.

I expect to see the brigade of freepers who insist pit bulls are no more dangerous than beagles any moment. Perhaps other dogs are just as or less likely to bite but the difference is the amount of damage a pit bull can cause compared to other dogs. And their ferocity. The amount proportion of dog deaths caused by pit bulls is substantially higher the the percentage of dogs in America that are pits.
