"Someday I need to dig into the reason why the counterweight is hinged..." The counterweight is hinged because it's a bucket. Fill the bucket with rocks and you are ready to go.
With any other configuration, the rocks would spill out.
In case it hasn't been noticed, the round stone to the left in the picture is the ammunition.

Prevents spillage of the load.

Well, that much is obvious but it would probably be easier to design a fixed enclosed container that would give the trebuchet rather more leverage, especially at the beginning of the launch.

That model has a 300 lb throw weight. More than enough to provide flight flights home to most illegal invaders.

Do agree that the hinged bucket design reduces problems with shifting bucket loads...

There’s another reason the counterweight is hinged...this helps to better transfer the potential energy in the weight to the kinetic energy of the projectile. Also, a proper trebuchet is mounted on wheels, as the rolling motion during the swing action of the arm also better transfers energy to the projectile.
I’m not an expert...I just saw a show on PBS, where they actually built one to a medieval drawing, and gradually figured out what worked best.

Theres another reason the counterweight is hinged...this helps to better transfer the potential energy in the weight to the kinetic energy of the projectile. Need to stop and consider this because it's not intuitive. Given that the change in elevation of the counterweight is significantly less with a hinged weight, there's less potential energy to transfer.

Great idea. Your gas milage will increase greatly once the Fleetwood craps out on you and you have to ride the bus.I dunno. My personal experience is that my mileage on foot is really impacted by excess consumption of ethanol.

This is simply augmented by adding more weight. They tried one trebuchet with solid lead ingots around the end of the swing arm, and actual tests showed the hinged bucket resulted in longer shots with the projectile.

Also, with the hinged bucket, it’s easier to adjust the load for more accurate targeting.

Good point. OK, I accept the hinged-load model.

That was a really neat show. If you ever have a chance to catch it on PBS or pick up the video, it’s well worth the effort.
