I still am not convinced. She said “Dead is dead, even in the wizarding world.”, but if it was a trick, DD wasn’t dead.

I know, that’s what I mean! She left us all these clues that say he might not be dead, but then she’s said over and over he’s not coming back, “He’s not going to do a Gandalf.” I admit it’s highly unlikely he would have used a Horcrux since his body is gone, but then we didn’t actually see it at the funeral. But he used Fawkes to escape before, so maybe his spirit is saved somewhere and will at least be able to advise Harry. Fawkes sure made the aftermath of DD’s death was dramatic. I loved that. What about the protections around Hogwarts? They would have expired with his death like the charm on Harry did on the roof. I know this stuff has been talked to death, but knowing we’re going to have the answer in a week makes it more fun to speculate!

Sounds like Clinton speak to me. Gandalf WAS dead, wasn’t he?

Oh! You mean if Snape is not bad then Dumbledore is not really dead, but we know that he is. I see. I don’t think it follows, though. I think Snape could have really killed DD but still be working against Voldemort. I don’t think it has come out yet exactly why DD is so sure of Snape’s loyalty. Harry thinks he knows, but I don’t think so. But I do think that if Snape is good he will have to die protecting Harry to prove it.

Gandalf wasn’t really dead after the fight with the Balrog. The Fellowship thought he was dead because he fell into the abyss. He was renewed as Gandalf the White, which I think is what JKR is referring to. But it’s not really a parallel because Gandalf isn’t human.

If Snape had allowed Draco to kill DD, he himself would have died of the Unbreakable Vow.

Are you sure? My recollection is that Snape vowed to help Draco in his mission, and if necessary to complete the task himself. Therefore, if Draco had killed Dumbledore, everything would be fine vis-a-vis Snape's vow.

To me, the interesting question is, why did Snape make the vow in the first place? It wasn't necessary to keep his "cover" (assuming it's such) as a Death Eater. Bellatrix Lestrange didn't support it.

My belief is that he did it because he's in love with Narcissa Malfoy, and I'm also not giving up on his being Draco's real father. After all, why else would he be so favorable to Draco all this time? Snape isn't stupid; he knows Draco is a creep!

Have you gotten to listen to any of the taped books yet, and did you like them?

I have “Prisoner of Azkaban,” and I’m enjoying it very much. My son got one of the tapes tangled in the player, though; fortunately it was one I’d already heard! The library will be annoyed with me.

I like the reader - very energetic!

I haven’t heard the Brit versions, but my complaint (one of a very few) about Dale’s interpretation is that he generally makes the women, but especially Hermione, seem very breathy and/or unbearably whiny.

And I agree that that whole VoldeMORE thing in the first few books was quite annoying!

Actually, I think Snape is a really nasty man, but is working for the good side.

Dumbledore may well be really dead, and if so, I think Snape had no choice, as I believe he has taken TWO unbreakable vows, one willingly to Dumbledore, one under duress to Narcissa.

Dunno about that. A Mugglenet editorial noted that "unbreakable vows" weren't Dumbledore's style.

Maybe. I guess DD could have just known about a previous one Snape took.

Has anyone read the theory that Dumbledore was impersonating Snape at Spinners End using the Polyjuice Potion?

Novel, but after the episode with Mad-Eye Moody in “Goblet of Fire,” I don’t think she’d use the same device again at a key point.
