BLADE RUNNER and THE THING are a quarter-century old today

Twenty-five years ago today, two movies debuted in theaters: Blade Runner and The Thing.

Personally, I think these are two of the most classic movies ever made. That a quarter-century later we are still debating so much about each of these films should say something about their timelessness. For what it's worth, I've never thought that Deckard was a Replicant in Blade Runner. I'm really looking forward to the definitive release of this movie on DVD (including Ridley Scott's "final cut") later this fall. And so far as the ending of The Thing - to this day the scariest movie that I ever saw - goes, well... it speaks for what the whole movie is about. To me, The Thing was less about the alien than it was about the paranoia among the crew of the research station. By the way, if you want to know more about The Thing, I know of no finer resource on the 'net than the excellent Outpost #31.

Thanks to Ain't It Cool News for reminding us of today's anniversaries!

The urban scenes in Blade Runner were prophetic in their visualization. And I've been a John Carpenter fan since Escape From New York.

i liked the original Thing better.

Didn't hold a candle to the remake - which actually had some resemblance to the short story "Who goes there" by J whosit Cambell

I know a guy who saw that movie while on LSD.

He came home to his dog and got all freaked that it would explode.

Did you like the book that it was based on?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

*AHEM* My screensaver is an A.I. program based on that book, appropriately called 'Electric Sheep'. Google it.

Hey! That is a great program! Do you find that you need to disable internet firewalls to use it?

I’m about to download it now. Thank you!

Deckard was a Replicant. Besides being the only healthy, strong, and perfect male in the film other then the known replicants, each replicant at some point in the film displayed glowing red eyes. Deckard’s eyes briefly glow red in a scene talking with red eyed Rachel in his apartment.

If Tyrell Corp was so worried about infiltrating replicants, I wondered why they just didn’t manufacture them with some obvious characteristic that would be identifiable on sight.

You may need to configure your proxy settings if you're behind a firewall, but that shouldn't be a big hassle. You can also save your frames if you want, and re-run them as MPEG files, too. It's an insidious and deliciously bizarre program. The SKYNET of screensavers. I'll switch off between that and SETI@home if I get bored.
