MAHAOregon State won its second consecutive national title with a 9-3 win against North Carolina on Sunday night. The Beavers became just the fifth team to repeat as national champion, and the first since Louisiana State in 1996-97.
Oregon State trailed for the first time in its last 50 CWS innings after UNC took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Beavers took the lead for good on Darwin Barneys two-run homer in the second inning. Junior righthander Mike Stutes picked up the win, limiting UNC to three runs on seven hits while striking out five over 5 1/3.
OSUs second title was largely devoid of the high drama of its first. Oregon State thoroughly dominated this CWS, becoming the first team ever to win four straight World Series games by six runs or more. It was quite a turnaround for the Beavers, who also became the first team ever to finish below .500 in their conference during the regular season and go on to win the national title.
North Carolina became the first team since Stanford in 2000-01 to repeat as national runner-up.
PAC 10 Baseball Rules, ACC Drools!
Congrats from a Tarheel.
But I thought the SEC/ACC schools were the best and greatest that there has ever been. I hate UNC!!!!!!
There should really be another forum for super-duper breaking news.
Thanks for the classy post Perdogg. (makes me feel bad for the bit about the ACC drooling, hehe) Just don’t go read the Tar Heel bulletin board, it got pretty bad there.
I’m sure the Heels will be among the best again. The Freshman Ackley is going to have two more years of getting stronger and better.
Thanks! :)
Da Beavs looked very impressive in the CWS. I do hope Daniel Turpen and Joe Paterson can pitch well in the Giants organization—I was happy my Giants drafted them.
Congratulations from an Oklahoma Sooner! You guys looked awesome.
Congratulations to Oregon State...It had a conference record which was under .500...
ASU, Arizona,UCLA,California, and Washington had better conference records than Oregon State. But, the NCAA committee picked Oregon State for the regionals, not California. Usually the number four team in a conference is picked...
However, Oregon State had a better overall record than Cal and Washington.
PAC-10 has dominated the CWS over the years.
It’s even more dominate in softball.
The PAC-10; The Conference of Champions.
The Beavers had a LONG road trip to start the season, and played top-ranked Eastern and Southern teams. They swept Georgia on the road. That’s why they made the field of 64 teams. They were still in the Top 25 in two polls at the end of the season.
Having a really tough non-conference schedule is what saved them.
I love Beavers!! Oh Oregon State. That kind of beaver.
