A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday.

Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.

The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police spokeswoman Toni Chovonetz said she had no further information, including how many people were involved.

The driver was able to get away is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

This was a racial murder, along the lines of Crown Heights.

They let me be. The food was great as was the music. People gave me no problem at all.

Historically, Juneteenth was a Texas thing only. However, since the 1970s it has spread a bit to areas with very large black populations.

For a matter of perspective, I think celebrating the news that blacks were freed from slavery is as good a reason as any to have a holiday.

That said, I am a little surprised this happened in Austin. When I started reading I just assumed it was Houston or Dallas. Then again, the east side can be rough at times.

What are the odds this will be charged as a hate crime?

According to witnesses several black males assaulted Morales when he stepped out of the vehicle to try and stop the crowd from assaulting the driver. It is believed there were 2,000 to 3,000 people who were in the area when the driver and Morales were attacked.

No. More likely El Cinco De Mayo will be the next holiday.
Don’t know who the driver was, but by the name of the passenger my guess is he was a Mexican.

I guess a lot of people are getting riled up about illegal aliens killing Americans with their cars.

And no - despite my tag name “ZULU” I’m white.

There have been a few cop on black and brown cop shootings in Austin over the last few years. For the last one a black male was shot in the back as he ran from police.

If this had been a white mob attacking a black or Hispanic person, the race angle would be played up and Jesse Jackson would be winging his way to Austin. But let’s move on, nothing to see here . . .

My first black friend was from Mississippi and we were stationed at Fort Hood.

I asked him what he was going to do for June Teen-th?

He replied “What is June Teen-th?”.

I told him the Emancipation Proclamation and asked him “ Didn't they tell you’ll in Mississippi?”.

I did not know it was a Texas date.

If it was called Emancipation Day then every American would celebrate it. But by giving it an Ebonic name it can be separate.

I live in South Austin and go to East Austin almost every day. the reality of East Austin is that it has gentrified and two bedroom tear down houses are selling for a quarter of a million dollars.

You are more likely to see a Yuppie in a BMW than see a urban blight.

So you are saying it was black yuppies that killed this man?

"Very neutral-sounding choice of words, isn’t it? I guess that “lynched” or “murdered” would have been too inciting. And it leaves the actual details regarding the manner of death completely unclear. Was the victim hanged, burned alive, shot, or killed by lethal injection?"

No, just beaten to death- beaten to a bloody pulp by an angry out of control mob.

At least they didn't set his corpse on fire and hang it from a bridge....

They were trying to kill the driver and the passenger intervened. Picture the scene in Trading Places when Winthorpe and valentine were in amongst the traders and yelled out their sell order.

Man Killed In Midst Of Crowd After Accident

Morales was a passenger in the car that hit the child. The driver of the car hasn't been ID'd yet, though is said to be co-operating with the cops.

So why hasn't LE released the name of the driver?

Guess no one here got the memo, because I was very much at work yesterday. In fact, I don’t know of anyone who was off yesterday.

Austin has had a lot of “racial trust” issues over the last few years. Most of them have involved the black community against the Austin Police Department.

I think there is continual overreaction down there. I am relatively certain a radically leftist bastion of government such as Austin would not harbor known racists on its police force.

I was not there and have no idea what the socio-economic status of the killers were.

My point was the East Austin is not a crime ridden or dangerous area. In fact all of Austin is quite safe with this only being the 11th homicide this year in Austin a city of 700,000 people.

This is the kind of savagery we use to read about in 3rd world countries, not Texas. And the child victim of the accident didn't even have life threatening injuries?

And the mob murders this guy?

Wow...

re: with a cell phone camera and a conscience recorded the murder

I’m not sure it would make a difference in today’s world. Remember when the new helicopter news crew recorded the horrible beating of the white truck driver by a mob of blacks in LA following the Rodney King verdict? They had excellent footage of the entire attack and it was all they could do to get a conviction.
