A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday.

Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.

The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police spokeswoman Toni Chovonetz said she had no further information, including how many people were involved.

The driver was able to get away is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

A friend of mine opened a coffee shop over in E. Austin to get in on the gentrifried yuppie market that is moving in there. All of the development has pushed the crack dealers south and the methadone addicts north.

It should be a relatively nice are in about 5 years.

Obviously a racist thing, but the media won’t report it as such.

Hey wardaddy. I am from J-town and went to Jackson Academy. Are you there now?

Amazing what has happened to that city in the last 15-20 years. Dern shame.

I think blacks “dislike” Mexicans even more than they “dislike” whites.

Well, DUH.

Hispanics are threatening to take away "most-favored-minority" status from blacks.

He hits and kills the kid,

Hey, you could get hired at CBS - the articles state that the child did not have life-threatening injuries - and you have the child "killed" -

Yep, Rather would be proud

They have it in the Twin Cities too. Somebody gets murdered every year, and there’s usually general mayhem to boot.

Funny how my thoughts paralleled Bubba Leroy when I read the “article”. Hmmm, contains no real facts. Hence, must be about: (choose one), minorities, illegals, or muslims. Nope, won’t hear about this on Katie’s nightly bimbo report.

I corrected it. So, the driver gets off cuz he only dinged him?

sure wouldn't want you on a jury judging me!

First you assume the kid was "killed" - which you corrected with the above post after several posters corrected you.

I wonder if this was an accident, pure and simple. It's possible that in a a large crowd of reveling folks - and it probably wouldn't be a stretch to assume some were inebriated? = that no one was watching the kid - or that otherwise that the kid was suddenly in front of the vehicle and the driver couldn't avoid him ??? But the kid was not injured seriously =

but you're ready to hang him. Hmmm -0 wonder if your fists and feet would've been in on the killing of the innocent-on-all-counts passenger - since you seem to shoot first and ask after

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

General Granger stood on a hotel balcony and read out "General Order #3":

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.
Source
Alas, General Order #3 was not followed in its entirety.

Interesting how the news media has to talk in code in order to convey the entire story. And only people who have lived in Texas know what Juneteenth is, so it is coded code, at that.

I was in a situation very similar to this, the difference was that a child on a bike ran into my car. The kid was fine, but was wailing and bawling. My friend and I got out to check on him and people started coming out of the apartment buildings. I looked up and it was like a swarm was descending on us.

Luckily, the police arrived very quickly and sent everyone home. The child admitted that he wasn’t even looking where he was riding and hit my car. His “parents” (I think aunt and uncle, but not sure) said he does this all the time and wasn’t even supposed to be out at that time of day.

I ended up getting off lightly, but before the police arrived I was truly scared for my life.

Or is black slavery and opression in America the only kind that counts?

It's the only place you can go mental over it... and the authorities will look the other way.

The newly departed will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
