the same bear had attacked campers in the same spot hours earlier.

Does anyone know if there was food in the tent? And if so, did the Forest Service put it there?

Prayers for the boy’s family. I can’t imagine the heartbreak. It does seem logical that the campers should have been warned.

The forest service is primarily to blame for not letting campers bring rifles into the campground.
To: george76
Why do people feel the need to blame someone else? If you camp in the woods with wild animals, there is a risk involved. Their loss is tragic, just suck it up and deal with it. Quit whining to the media. Whatever happened to suffering in silence?
Personally, I blame the tent manufacturers for not printing labels on their tents warning of possible bear attacks.

the same bear had attacked campers in the same spot hours earlier. Yes, they should have been warned of this. Who would want to go to sleep in this spot? Yikes.

Girl Scout Escapes From Bear Trying to Pull Her Out of Tent in New Jersey
June 7, 2007
WHITE HAVEN, Pa. A bear tried to pull a Girl Scout out of her tent during a camping trip, the girl and scout officials said.
Celeste Tietz, 11, said Wednesday that she managed to grab a tent pole and slide out of her sleeping bag as the bear was tugging at it early Sunday morning at Camp Mosey Wood.

People always say thing in anger. When heads cool down he will see that to blame others for an accident will not solve anything.

Just reading some of the more recent black bear encounter/attack/death stories on FR. It’s happening all over the country—NJ, WI, CO, TN, FL, UT, PA, NY.

Bears will be bears. Always have, always will. They aren't big furry teddy bears..

A tragic story, my heart goes out to the family. Yes this tragedy may have been averted had the forest service gave a warning, but most likely the bear would have just moved on down to another campsite. I've hunted deer and elk all over the west from NM. to Oregon and one thing you have to remember is, once you step into their domain, bears look at you as nothing more than a food source. It's the same when your swimming in the ocean. Once you enter the water or the woods, your just part off the food chain, and you better damn well respect it. Here's one i had a run in with in Alaska, while salmon fishing. He eventually had to be shot, about 2 days later when he attacked some fishermen in a camp north of us.

The significant fact was not that there was a prior bear attack, but that there were bears in the area. The family chose to trade safety for the thrill of sleeping among them without taking adequate precautions. The result was tragedy, but not the fault of someone else.

One disrespects bears at one's own peril.

Post-tragedy litigation, regulation, or substitution
