Why do people feel the need to blame someone else? If you camp in the woods with wild animals, there is a risk involved. Their loss is tragic, just suck it up and deal with it. Quit whining to the media. Whatever happened to suffering in silence?
Personally, I blame the tent manufacturers for not printing labels on their tents warning of possible bear attacks.
I think the Forest Service may have been at fault here. In the exact spot the bear had been after other campers. They should have warned campers in the area. And, even if this guy had had a gun, it happened so quickly he wouldn’t have been able to react in time to save his step-son. He thought from the cut in the tent that a human had done it with a knife. I feel awful for this family. Everytime I think about this, I just want to cry.

Forest Service officials said it was the same 300-pound black bear that harassed another group of campers in the same spot earlier Sunday.
Kurt Francom said his son, Jake, was kicked in the head through a tent wall by a bear that clamped his jaws on a pillow and carried it off.
“It could have been my boy,” said Francom, a school custodian.
There’s not really enough information in this story to make an accurate assessment of what went on.
Still, it’s a little harsh to pass judgement on someone who has lost a child in a senseless manner such as this when the person is just having a natural reaction which is to try and figure out how the incident could have been prevented and determine why it wasn’t.
What if it was YOUR child? Would you be so quick to “suck it up?” I wouldn’t think so. Me either.
As for “whining to the media” you know how media is. They are probably all over this family asking questions and trying to sell papers. Generally people involved in tragedies would want to be left alone. This guy wants answers. I don’t see how anyone can blame him.
