Family Of Boy Killed By Bear Blames Forest Service
The Associated Press ^ | Jun 19, 2007

Posted on 06/19/2007 10:15:47 PM PDT by george76

The grandfather of a boy killed by a black bear while camping blamed the U.S. Forest Service Tuesday for not getting the word out about an earlier attack.

Before 11-year-old Sam Ives was attacked and killed Sunday night, the same bear had attacked campers in the same spot hours earlier.

Eldon Ives is the boy's grandfather. He told reporters Tuesday that he hoped the Forest Service will do a better job of protecting campers after Sam's death.

He said the violent way his grandson was killed is a sorrow that will never heal.

Sam Ives would have been a 6th grader this fall.

He was camping with his family in American Fork Canyon on Father's Day when a black bear dragged him from their tent and killed him.

We did not have a bear problem until the illegals started voting and the newbie liberals moved in and also started voting...all the wrong way.

Hunting seasons have been eliminated, historical hunting practices have been made illegal, and the bear population numbers are growing.

There will be many more bear attacks in the near future and the liberals will never blame the growing bear populations.

Bears will be bears. Always have, always will. They aren't big furry teddy bears.

Not just out west :

Bear Mauls and Kills Infant in New York State

A bear killed an infant Monday afternoon as it tried to drag the girl into the woods, officials said. The baby, Ester Schwimmer of Brooklyn, was snatched out of her stroller by the bear at the bungalow colony, police said. Fallsburg is about 70 miles northwest of New York City.

Isaac Abraham, a community leader from Williamsburg in Brooklyn, said witnesses told him the 5-month-old girl was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital upon arrival.

The baby was in a stroller in front of the porch with members of her family, said Mike Fraser, a state Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman. The bear grabbed the stroller and the child, Fraser said. The child was knocked out of the stroller and the bear tried to drag her into the woods, Fraser said

The bear populations are up everywhere.

Hunting seasons have been eliminated.

Bears are learning that the easy food is from humans.

Problem bears in Yellowstone are dumped in Utah, thus Utah has an excess of problem bears that were ‘trained’ in Yellowstone. These bears do not untrain themselves.

A tragic story, my heart goes out to the family. Yes this tragedy may have been averted had the forest service gave a warning, but most likely the bear would have just moved on down to another campsite. I've hunted deer and elk all over the west from NM. to Oregon and one thing you have to remember is, once you step into their domain, bears look at you as nothing more than a food source. It's the same when your swimming in the ocean. Once you enter the water or the woods, your just part off the food chain, and you better damn well respect it. Here's one i had a run in with in Alaska, while salmon fishing. He eventually had to be shot, about 2 days later when he attacked some fishermen in a camp north of us. The significant fact was not that there was a prior bear attack, but that there were bears in the area. The family chose to trade safety for the thrill of sleeping among them without taking adequate precautions. The result was tragedy, but not the fault of someone else.

Colorado had a spring bear hunt season.

Since the illegals now can vote in safe cities and the newbie liberals invaded : they all vote the wrong way.

Before this mess, we never had any problem bears. Now we have them every day.

It is not just about harvesting bad bears : the bears learned in the past that humans were not an easy source for food. Now they break into homes daily.

Bears do break into people’s homes.

Bears do kill grandmothers whose only crime was to be asleep in her bed. The grandmother did not deserve to be eaten by bear inside of her home.

One disrespects bears at one's own peril.
Sometimes in life, there are no second chances.

Post-tragedy litigation, regulation, or substitution
of a different reel with a happier ending doesn't work.

"Say, I've found a perfect spot to catch us a bear."

"How can you be sure?"

"I saw a sign that said Fine for Hunting."

“You can remove attractants; you can warn the critters you’re there, but going into the wild without the means of protecting yourself is really, really stupid—as is the policy that sanctions this stupidity.”

Indeed. I can not stress this enough.

If you have a car, lock food and garbage in the trunk

That's great advice.

Thanks for the ping.

If all the facts of this piece are correct and nothing was left out, which I’m skeptical of because it’s AP, I would think the Forest Service should have alerted people because of the attack earlier.

It’s very sad indeed this happened but IMO there are many reasons. Those reasons have come about over a lot of years and I think these events will increase.

Many people that want the experience of camping don’t know the first thing about it and take their families into wild areas and know nothing or very little of safety precautions they should take.

Anti-hunting whackos and animal rights whackos want us to live among the animals because it was their habitat we are taking away from them. Of course the vast majority of those whackos live in the cities where the only wild animal they see is in a zoo.

Bears, cougars, coyotes and wolves are increasing in numbers because of the anti-hunting people and these animals have to eat, they are forced to seek food in more populated areas not only because there are more of them but people are populating what was once their habitat.

25 years ago and before that the people that lived in the areas where these animals existed kept them thinned out for their own protection and the protection of their livestock and pets. Now it seems polititions and agencies, because of the enviro whackos, want to relocate problem animals instead of just shooting them and it’s not working very well, IMO.
