Macintosh…Help me understand why
ZDnet ^ | May 27th | Christopher Dawson

I can feel them…the flames…they’re coming. But I have to ask this question again (yes, I’ve asked one very much like it before) in light of recent events. The recent events, of course, involve the release of a particular Linux distribution with a funny African sort of name and, maybe more significantly, the first tier-one vendor’s adoption of said funny-sounding distro as an OS choice. Macintosh, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly focused on consumer appliances (oh yeah, AppleTV, that has applications in the classroom), notebooks (even their “budget” Macbooks are running Core 2 Duos), and high-end workstations (rumors are flying about the demise of the Mac Mini and the 17″ iMac). While I’ll be the first to admit that OS X is a truly elegant operating system and that both Mac hardware and software are full of useful little features and innovations, so is Kubuntu. And Xubuntu. Sorry, not loving Gnome so much lately, so I’m leaving the actual funny-African-named distro off the list, but I can’t say enough good stuff about Edubuntu. Several readers have mentioned recent innovations in Mandriva that they believe makes it even better than the ‘buntus; I’ve had great experiences with Fedora Core and OpenSUSE. I know a bunch of former Mac owners who think Yellow Dog Linux is about the best thing since sliced bread. So with all of these innovations and really refined interfaces, with so many great alternatives to Windows, why would I stretch my budget for a really pretty case? Why would I buy a really expensive laptop with JUST ONE MOUSE BUTTON??!!!

I know what FUD stands for. I just think it's funny how quickly anyone with a dissenting opinion on Macs will get attacked by the fanboys (not just on FR; anywhere on the Internet). They can't just have a different opinion, or even be mistaken - they must be lying if they're not sufficiently worshipful toward the Mac.

No, what I have seen here on FR is that whereas Mac users tend to give actual reasons, speaking directly to the issue at hand, pro-PCers tend to be sneering, snide, disparaging, over-generalizing, and obfuscating.

LOL as usual I’m the one actually keeping the thread on topic - Apple vs. Linux.

You took it far away, from the actual technical merits and market realities of the operating systems to a discussion of the politics of one contributor to the average Linux distro (forgetting the fact that it's possible to run Linux with zero GNU tools installed). That is not keeping it on topic.

to defend Russian hackers illegally cracking Apple’s OSX operating system

Maybe in this country, but they did it in a country where the DMCA and such draconian, rights-taking license restrictions are, respectively, non-existent and likely unenforceable. One might as well say your China-bashing is illegal because it is illegal in China.

^^^^^^^^^I’ve used both operating systems on a regular basis for many years, so my claim is based on actual experience.^^^^^^^^^^

Oh, I see. So your experience is worth gold and mine is worth crap.

That’s nice of you.

^^^^^^^^^^Mac OS X is a much better system for a typical computer user.^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I can’t say I disagree, but 2010? Please, I hope you cleaned your foot before it went in that mouth.

^^^^^^^^^The Linux software packages you claim are “arguably ahead of macs” probably work just fine on Macs.^^^^^^^^^^^

They may very well. But they’re not standard fare.

^^^^^^^^^^Dell could decide to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in research and development to create DellOS on top of Linux, similar to Apple’s creation of Mac OS X on top of Unix. Dell could create a consistent, easy-to-use interface, and some great application suites. In a few years, it could be the first great Linux-based desktop operating system. It might even become a worthy competitor to Mac OS X.^^^^^^^^^^^

You’re still overstating things. Neither windows nor linux is that far behind a mac in every day usage.

And yes, I put linux ahead of windows. It just does weird things from time to time.

^^^^^^^Maybe, maybe not but partnering with leftists always has a cost.^^^^^^^^^

You didn’t know that the google bunch are leftists, did you?

Just like you didn’t know Jobs is a leftist. Or Gates.

There’s an old saying.........

‘Ignorance is bliss.’

^^^^^^^^^^^^^Stallman and the FSF are well known ultra-leftists^^^^^^^^^^

Good thing I don’t give a dime to them eh?

I guess that makes me a better conservative than you.

I don’t give a dime to well known leftists.

You give plenty of money to well known leftists. Or are you one of those idiots who steals your windows OS?

LMAO there is no further left than Stallman, http://www.stallman.org is of course perfect proof. Watching you guys spin in circles trying to defend that kook is hilarious, here you are mentioning Google as equally left while obviously oblivious to the recent request from Stallman’s group that Google hand over their internal software improvements for free. After seeing your posts I’d have to say you’re the most poorly informed linux pimp on here, which is pretty incredible LOL.

Oh, I see. So your experience is worth gold and mine is worth crap.

I wouldn't put it that way.

Since this is a thread about Linux vs. Macs, a person with experience on both platforms can make a more informed decision about how they compare.

If you have some relevant Mac and Linux experience to share with us, I'm sure we'd all be interested in hearing about it.

He doesn’t know jack about this industry, argued with me for days after I posted proof the spinning desktops in Beryl Linux came first on Macs via Desktop Manager and other utils. He’s probably never even seen or heard of Slapbook either, but as soon as Linux copies it he will be here again boasting of some supposed “new” Linux feature without even realizing Apple already has it LOL.

^^^^^^^^^there is no further left than Stallman^^^^^^^^

And to stallman’s left wing causes I’ve contributed zero dollars.

How many dollars have you contributed to bill gates’ left wing causes?

How many dollars have you contributed to Jobs’ left wing causes?

^^^^^^^^^^here you are mentioning Google as equally left^^^^^^^

Uh uh. No no. Sorry. Those are your words, not mine. I merely said they were leftists, but the infatuation with equality belongs solely to you.

I was merely making a statement of fact.

And just as the facts bear Jobs and Gates to be leftists, so do the facts bear the google boys to also be leftists.

Oh, and just so that it’s clear, I’ve never given any money to google’s left wing causes either.

Obviously, free software radicals don’t like to pay for things, like most liberals and socialists they want things provided to them for free. Maybe one day you’ll mumble something we don’t already know LOL.

Now if only you could learn to distinguish that minority of radicals from the rest of the free software using world.

It’s not a matter of giving away something for free or not, it’s a matter of supporting left wing causes with money/funds.

I normally don’t support left wing causes with my money.

You do.

GE won’t be back in this discussion most likely.

Having been called out on financial support for leftists, what can be said? Nothing!

Notice the ‘GE OUT’. I’ve seen that a few times, I guess that also means ‘i’m cornered here, so I’ve got nothing left to gain’.

No it means I don’t have anything left to prove, I don’t directly support any radical green party leftists but you clearly do. Stallman obviously doesn’t need money to further his leftist goals, all he needs is blind disciples who want things for free above all else and you perfectly fit the mold. Stallman’s own website http://www.stallman.org is perfect proof of what you’re supporting, and no amount of vague generalities accusing others comes anywhere close. Not that you’re capable of understanding the basic simplicity of your failed argument though, my posts are clearly above your intellect and targeted at lurkers with a working rational mind.

GE OUT

Anybody here who believes that proprietary software is dangerous and will only use free software for that reason, please chime in. Anybody? Didn't think so.

Stallman’s own website http://www.stallman.org is perfect proof of what you’re supporting

You must be personally responsible for a higher Google ranking for that site since you link to it more than any leftist I've seen. With that link I went there for the first time ever just now (as opposed to you, an apparently regular visitor).

Yep, just as I said, whacko. But I can see a few things I agree with:

  1. A call against Yahoo for helping the communist Chinese government arrest truth-telling journalists
  2. Don't buy broken CDs (which might rootkit you)
  3. A campaign against Internet censorship
Do you disagree with any of those? Especially for #1 it appears you have the choice of being a "Stallman supporter" or supporting the Chinese dictatorship. Which one is it? Are you a communist or just a leftist whacko?

Of course you agree with Stallman’s website, here he is mentioned in a recent article pairing Linux up with foreign communists again:

http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/06/05/Red-Hat-assists-open-source-in-India_1.html

Red Hat is to help the communist government of Kerala, in southwestern India, to deploy open-source software in its e-governance and literacy efforts.

The Kerala government will make all efforts to develop free software, and will use free and open-source software in e-governance projects, according to a draft state IT policy released in January.

Richard Stallman, president of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in Boston, was able to gather support from politicians in Kerala and West Bengal, another communist run state, during his visit there last year.

LOL at antiRepublican claiming others are now trying to stray the thread. Since that already failed for him now he’s trying to lower the bar for his hero Stallman into acceptability. Failing miserabaly too, of course.
