Heres the story of how scientists unlocked the secrets of the worst natural disaster in the history of the West African nation of Cameroon and what theyre doing to try and stop it from happening again.
THE DISCOVERY
On the morning of August 22, 1986, a man hopped onto his bicycle and began riding from Wum, a village in Cameroon, towards the village of Nyos. On the way he noticed an antelope lying dead next to the road. Why let it go to waste? The man tied the antelope onto his bicycle and continued on. A short distance later he noticed two dead rats, and further on, a dead dog and other dead animals. He wondered if theyd all been killed by a lightning strike when lightning hits the ground its not unusual for animals nearby to be killed by the shock.
Soon the man came upon a group of huts. He decided to see if anyone there knew what had happened to the animals. But as he walked up to the huts he was stunned to see dead bodies strewn everywhere. He didnt find a single person still aliveeveryone in the huts was dead. The man threw down his bicycle and ran all the way back to Wum. (click on the link, pictures are important)

Lake inversion. Why sequestering CO2 under the sea is a bad idea.
That potential exists in a lot of places.
For my money the sudden draining of Lake Peigneur in Louisiana was pretty strange but there were no deaths.
I remember this story when it was reported in the 1980s. I wonder if Algore figured these things into his CO2 calculations? (Doubtful).
When was that? I had not heard of that.
The swirling vortex of doom was in 1980. They were drilling for oil and hit a salt mine.

Come to think of it, I recall seeing something on either the History Channel or the Discovery channel that mentioned that.
Funny, I lived in Houston in 1980 and simply do not recall that on the news. But then, I was six-years-old in 1980.
Amazing.

Anybody looking for affordable lakefront property?
No pumps needed - pure CO2 release pressure (that is an 8" diameter pipe)
ping
reminds me of when they punched thru from Chgo river
Odd that the only two instances of this type occurrence both happened in Africa.

I saw something on (I think) the History Channel that this phenomenon might have explained the death of the first borns in Egypt during Moses’ plagues (the first borns slept in low beds on the floor).
