Bad habits key to man's longevity

(China Daily)

Updated: 2007-05-21 14:52

Zhang Shuqing, a centenarian in Pixian, Sichuan, has his own secret for long life - smoking every day and drinking liquor after every meal.

Zhang, whose daughter died eight years ago, turned 100 on May 7. He lives with his nephew Zhang Chenggui.

Zhang senior said he started smoking and drinking strong liquor when he was in his early 20s. Since then, he has smoked every day and taken a drink with every meal.

According to his grandson Xu, Zhang has consumed 15 tons of liquor and more than a ton of tobacco in his lifetime.

Zhang, who is in good health, has a huge appetite, with a standard meal comprising two chicken legs, a bowl of steamed pork fat and glutinous rice, vegetables and fruit. And he eats the lot in less than 20 minutes.

Big deal...I think I consumed that much liquor and tobacco last weekend. PLUS, I OWN firearms too!

I am IMMORTAL.

Doubtful that that helped him. The nature of statistics are that their are some anomalies. On average a smoker and a drinker won’t last as long as someone with a healthier lifestyle. Doesn’t mean that a trim marathoner with no vices can’t die at 40 and that a fat slob who drinks a lot can’t live to 95.

My dad (b. 1915) fought in 2 wars, worked 70+ hour weeks until he was 75, smoked a pack of cigs and a few pipes a day, never exercised, took a drink a few times a week, ate what ever he wanted - including red meat.

made it to 90 and died of complications from a broken hip.

BTW: he was a physician / surgeon

All 4 of my grandparents lived into their early 90’s (one made 96). All smoked most of their lives. One grandfather smoked till his death and one grandmother gave up smoking in her 70’s, but chewed tabaky into her 90’s.

My mother died of cancer at 47 and never smoked. I don’t smoke and I’m convinced it’s bad for you, but I don’t believe all the hype about second hand smoke.

Yeah me too....

I have a coworker who stays sick all the time. Allergies, stomach ulsers, aches and pains, this virus or that, ALWAYS something. Dude has never had a drink of alcohol or a smoke in his entire life.

Hmmff, I have enough residual poison in my body on any given morning to put him in the hospital for a week and I feel great.

I rembember being at my grandmothers house. She was in her nighties eating a fatback sandwich and a glass of buttermilk with a dip of TubeRose snuff in her mouth. There was only one way to cook things ~ fried.

Never met a more content and happy person. I have met some pretty irritable dieters though.

You are exactly right....and it kills brain cells. Of course, only the weak brain cells are killed allowing the stronger brain cells more room to flourish.

chuckle

I know exactly what you mean.

In college, I remember from philosophy the one Friedrich Nietzsche quote that I really liked:

“What does not destroy me, makes me stronger.”

That “fifth of scotch a day” thing for longevity didn’t work out too well for me.
