I just read that the Dorgan amendment to strip the “nonimmigrant guestworker program” from the immigration bill failed, something like 61 to 31. Can someone explain what this amendment meant, and why even a good portion of Dims voted against it?

This one has me confused also, always. I see very conservative Tom Coburn voted with the Lib Dems like Boxer who wanted it stripped.

I think its non appeal for some of these folks had to do with the idea that it would adversely affect American low wage earners.

That may have been Coburn's beef, also. I just don't know for sure.
