Brady deserves a tip of the cap [Took pay cut to help bring Moss in]

Quarterback Tom Brady has yet to publicly comment on the Patriots' acquisition of receiver Randy Moss, but his actions speak volumes.

As part of the whirlwind process that brought Moss to New England, Brady provided a key assist.

Because the Patriots had to acquire the original terms of Moss's contract as part of the trade with the Raiders, the team needed to clear salary cap space to absorb the $9.75 million figure that Moss was scheduled to earn.

Enter Brady, who agreed to restructure his present contract that runs through 2010 to create the space.

That allowed the Patriots to finalize the trade for Moss, who then tore up his old contract and signed a one-year, $3 million deal that could be worth up to $5 million in incentives.

"Tom does what he can in order to win," said Don Yee, his agent.

Brady's involvement with the Moss discussions was just one of the layers to a beat-the-clock process that began when the Patriots received permission from the Raiders to speak with Moss late Saturday night after the first three rounds of the draft.

At that point, Moss still had to fly to New England to take a physical and meet with team officials, all before the second day of the draft began at 11 a.m. Sunday.

While quarterbacks and receivers often talk about being on the same page on the field, Brady's actions have helped him get off to a strong start with Moss off the field.

See if you can find any other sportsman out there who is so dedicated to winning that he cuts his own pay check.

I’ve seen a good number of QB’s do this over the years specifically to bring in WR help.

Don’t take this as a knock on Brady..it was a fine move he made..but I’d wager you that he got something out of it also...What you ask..how about guarantees? I’m not sure what % of Brady’s contract was GUARANTEED, but let’s say here’s how it might work. Assume for the sake of example that he has two years left on his contract, at $6 mill each..only this coming season is guaranteed. He restructures it to pay him $3 mill over 4 years, plus interest to represent the time value of money over the extra two years, AND, the entire contract is guaranteed.

In Brady Quinn’s case the Browns made that decision for him.

As a Jets fan, I am glad that New England has imported Cancer.

I can actually see Moss throwing his helmet in Brady’s face.

The example you give may well reflect the new structure.

But as a pro, wouldn't it be to his benefit to load it on the front end, rather than stretching it out?

Like you though, I don't know what is guaranteed.

uh, Peyton Manning......Troy Aikman.....

Brady makes eight figures in endorsements so a couple million dollars reallocated here and there (not lost, just moved around) aren’t the sacrifice being suggested.

Of course, the Boston media is going to beatify the guy as if he is the human embodiment of sweetness and light. Sure, he seems like a great guy and this is absolutely a great thing to do to keep winning. But he will be even richer if he can win another Super Bowl so this is strategically a great move for his own future income.

All praise the man of Brady. Now he’s avoided additional court judgements that are inevitable from his fathering his illegitimate baby with that Monaghan girl.

Nice move Tom.

When the team hits a rough spot on the schedule, just wait for some backhanded comment to the press from Moss.
Nothing overt. Just enough to get others on the team to wonder "What did he mean by that?"

A minor law infraction off the field. Nothing major, but it will bring a lot of media attention. Press continually asking the coach how he will discipline Moss.

Pats winning but Moss is not a big part of the games. He will start to pout. ESPN pundits start to show plays where he quits half way through.

All this mixed in with a few spectacular catches and probably one game where he steals the show.

Sportswriters love the chaos he causes. They get endless story material. But he is a tumor on team unity.

If it were for a first round pick and we had to pay the same amount of money Oakland was then yeah.

Isn’t this actually the second time he (Brady) has done something like this?

As a Jets fan you should know better than to believe that Belicheck would ever tolerate Moss’ antics to the level of throwing his helmet at anyone, especially Brady. If Moss becomes a cancer with the Pat’s he will be gone. Moss’ acquisition provides the Jets with bad news, not good.

Moss would attractive negativity to Patriots clubhouse.

They are not used to it and it would certainly effect them enough to lose some critical games.

Moss is just another watered-down TO - still pretty lethal to fortunes of any team that has him.
