He does bring up a valid point. Alot of linux users are leftists who just can't understand business.

It isn’t so much that they’re leftists, althought I’m sure that many of them are. It’s more that they share a utopian worldview - ‘free’ software for everyone - the implication being that your intellectual property has no value. Scratch the surface, and you’ll most likely find other messianic and in some cases, megalomaniac worldviews.

I leave it as an excercise for our readers to examine the similarities in worldview to other utopian types.

There’s quite a number of us who use Linux simply because we see it as a superior OS.

Rob Enderle is not a credible news hack on the topic of Linux.

For an eyeful check out his pro-SCO ravings in the
SCO-vs.IBM&world case on Groklaw, such as:
http://www.groklaw.net/articlebasic.php?story=20040810032827912

Here’s a search of all the Enderle hits on Groklaw:
http://snipurl.com/1hh9u
Not sure how long that snipurl result will be valid.
Groklaw’s own search engine threw an error.

Dell may in part be looking at Linux on lappies
because of customer resistance to Vista (see
another thread today on that topic). The only
thing dumber than buying a Vista PC is buying a
Vista laptop.

No doubt, but that doesn’t mean that it plays well in the average SMB environment. Small business operations don’t have the time to mess with an OS, they don’t have a suport staff much less an ‘IT guy’ - they just want it to work. Windows, like it or not, has the weight of a mature support infrastructure behind it. When it’s properly set up, a Windows-based network requires little intervention.

I’ve got a couple of different Linux distros running on my net and it’s fun- but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to inflict it on my clients.

And hey - if Jobs had decided to take the stick out of his rear end and open up the Mac platform way back when, guess which OS would rule the business world today?

Alot of linux users are leftists

LOL

If it works and is safe, I'm all for using stuff that leftist Utopianoids give away for free.

Other than dabbling with it every so often (the Knoppix 5 DVD is neat), I don't really use linux on a daily basis.

I keep meaning to put it on one of my machines to find out if my old unix command line brain files aren't completely degraded by now.

Besides, if linux makes the Microserfs at HQ squirm in their shorts, all the better.

"There’s quite a number of us who use Linux simply because we see it as a superior OS."

Very true, especially when it comes to stability and security.

I just agreed to help a client of mine "devirus" his windows box (for free, I don't do computer work). I just traded services with a carpenter on Craig's List to come and fix my door (taking water under the theshold plate) to fix his windows box (it sounds like he is eaten up with adware and viruses).

I use linux because it is reasonably priced (ok, it is free, but I send the good folks at MEPIS a hundred dollars a year because I think it is worth it), it doesn't need virus or adware protection, it is stable, AND IT WORKS! Maybe that is what "superior" means? Oh yeah. It is also lots faster on my machines.

that is a stupid statement. many windows users are leftist. in fact, most leftist i know own windows or buy macs and they cost out the %#@. the only linux users i know personally are business tech people who are in it for the money and are hardcore conservatives.

speaking of macs, this a business model dell could do well to copy with their linux desktop.

if they limit the computers they build to just a few models they can test the available software that they will use and build a rock solid desktop.

unlike your typical windows box you can cram TONS of software on a linux box without dragging down the OS.

if the user has all the software they need, and the software is working they will need very little support.

^^^^^^^^^^^^It isn’t so much that they’re leftists, althought I’m sure that many of them are. It’s more that they share a utopian worldview - ‘free’ software for everyone^^^^^^^^^^

Think you could name one single ‘rightist’ who is on the OSS bandwagon for that exact reason?

I’m on the OSS bandwagon because it’s a better product. There are several freepers who are the same.

^^^^^^^^^^^^Scratch the surface, and you’ll most likely find other messianic and in some cases, megalomaniac worldviews.^^^^^^^^^^^

It might do you some good to spend some time in a forum that’s dedicated to linux......... that also has a special spot in it for politics.

:-)

If you do such a thing come back when you no longer have your hair left and report what you’ve found.

LOL

^^^^^^^^^^^I leave it as an excercise for our readers to examine the similarities in worldview to other utopian types.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I understand what you’re saying, but as a general applicable rule of thumb, they’re leftists.

Be they greens, communists, socialists, anarchists, liberals, progressives, athiests, journalists, altruists, or any of the other many ‘ists’ that we’ve all seen.

They are not big fans of free economic/market based systems.

Go ahead and go into one of their forums and let it be known that you’re a bush supporter. Here is what you will get:

http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/howlers.htm

I can almost guarantee it.

Now you’re speaking my language.

Why pay for less when you can get more for free? So many people just have no clue about this concept.(a modification of the age old more for less/less for more addage)

As I’ve told many others, put away your command line thinking cap. Just install red hat/fedora and move your cute mouse cursor around. On the off chance that you may need to dig out some obscure command you can just google it.

^^^^^^^^^that is a stupid statement. many windows users are leftist.^^^^^^^^

I appologize. I should’ve made it more clear that I meant as a percentage.

Like for example, you have criminals in all communities, but the black community is ‘hit’ particularly hard by percentage of how many blacks are criminals.

The percentage of the linux community which is leftist is higher.

^^^^^^^^^^^the only linux users i know personally are business tech people who are in it for the money and are hardcore conservatives.^^^^^^^^^^

Maybe that’s part of the problem. As I stated to another poster, you should try going to a linux specific forum which also happens to have a small section or folder for politics.

When you get tired of ripping your hair out, let me know. lol

^^^^^^^^^^^^speaking of macs, this a business model dell could do well to copy with their linux desktop.^^^^^^^^^^^

Agreed.

^^^^^^^^^if the user has all the software they need, and the software is working they will need very little support.^^^^^^^^^^

I’m sure some dell bean counter came up with the same or similar idea. There’s a reason that apple is able to maintain such high margins.

> That may very well be, but did you have a
> specific problem with this particular piece?

Sure.

“I’m watching the progress ...”

But he declined to give us any links to the
straw men he pretends to topple.

“This means Dell cannot realistically give you
the distribution you want ...”

True but irrelevant. From his Redmond shill
perspective, he’s presuming that the majority of
the market segment that wants Linux on a Dell
laptop has the same expectations as a Windows user.

They don’t. What they mainly want is a lappy that
contains only components for which Linux drivers
exist. Self-support is acceptable, but only if it’s
possible (which it isn’t with many lappies today).

Dell can pick a distro that Dell is willing to
support, and tell buyers they’re on their own
if they replace it. That alone would be major
progress. And yes, no matter which distro they
pick, religious wars will erupt over it (as they
did inside a company I worked for that began
offering Linux on workstations).

Hand the man a mirror.

His comment also applies to Windows. Try to buy
a laptop today, that comes with Vista, but also
is assured to have XP and Win2K drivers. Far too
many LTs (and I’ve owned several like this) are
supported ONLY with the OS that came on them.
Drivers do not exist for earlier or later OSes.

Heck, there are PCs on the market today, with
bundled Vista Home Basic, that will NOT run
the other versions of Vista. If you want to run
“Pro” on that box, “the OEM cannot give you the
distro you want”.

“The typical Linux desktop, or server, purchaser
has a tendency to buy very little and look for
products that have little or no margin.”

Baloney. Although this might describe many legacy
Linux users, it does not describe an emerging
mainstream desktop Linux user.

I want to switch to Linux because I do not
like the direction Mr. Bill is headed with his
DRM, licensing and pricing (in that order - note
that pricing is not the major concern). I have
some expensive apps on Windows. I am perfectly
willing to buy them for Linux. Where freeware
meets my needs I will of course use it, as I
already do on Windows.

“If you truly believe Linux will save you a lot of money ...”

Again, that’s what MS told him to say, and not
necessarily what a Linux-LT user wants.
They want choice.

I’d be willing to spend just as much for a Linux
LT as a Windows one, maybe more (to be assured of
getting Linux-supported components).
________
PS - I use an MS keyboard also.
