There’s quite a number of us who use Linux simply because we see it as a superior OS.
No doubt, but that doesn’t mean that it plays well in the average SMB environment. Small business operations don’t have the time to mess with an OS, they don’t have a suport staff much less an ‘IT guy’ - they just want it to work. Windows, like it or not, has the weight of a mature support infrastructure behind it. When it’s properly set up, a Windows-based network requires little intervention.
I’ve got a couple of different Linux distros running on my net and it’s fun- but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to inflict it on my clients.
And hey - if Jobs had decided to take the stick out of his rear end and open up the Mac platform way back when, guess which OS would rule the business world today?
Very true, especially when it comes to stability and security.
True dat.
I just agreed to help a client of mine "devirus" his windows box (for free, I don't do computer work). I just traded services with a carpenter on Craig's List to come and fix my door (taking water under the theshold plate) to fix his windows box (it sounds like he is eaten up with adware and viruses).
I use linux because it is reasonably priced (ok, it is free, but I send the good folks at MEPIS a hundred dollars a year because I think it is worth it), it doesn't need virus or adware protection, it is stable, AND IT WORKS! Maybe that is what "superior" means? Oh yeah. It is also lots faster on my machines.
