An unprecedented wave of union support propelled at least four challengers to victory Tuesday over incumbent aldermen backed by Mayor Richard Daley, including veteran Ald. Dorothy Tillman (3rd).
But despite a multimillion-dollar infusion of union cash and campaign workers, incumbents Bernard Stone (50th) and Howard Brookins (21st) survived strong challenges in Tuesday's runoff election, with the mayor's help.
Labor claimed its most notable victories in the 3rd Ward, where Pat Dowell unseated Tillman, and the 16th Ward, where Joann Thompson easily defeated 16-year council veteran Shirley Coleman.
Tillman, a self-styled maverick, had gratefully accepted Daley's help against Dowell, who works for the University of Chicago.
"The people of the 3rd ward, this victory is really yours," Dowell said.
With all of the precincts counted, Dowell had a 666-vote edge. Tillman went home for the night after telling supporters the race was too close to call.

They kept interrupting the rebroadcast of Hannity last night with updates.
I’m trying to find out results of my town’s election.
The Hat has always been an entertaining kook. Just about anyone would probably be an improvement.
You can say that again.
I see Bernie Stone held onto his seat. That guy’s been around forever!
I am new to this forum, so if I mess up you know why. I disagree with this poster on thier feeling that Unions have crippled American Business for 40 years. Unions have helped the American worked for much longer than 40 years by providing above average wages, benefits and working conditions. The unions of America have provided this country with a powerful middle class, something that has been severely wounded in America. We need the unions as without them American business will ride slipshod over the American worker. If unions were in thier rightful power mode, there would be no American business leaving for cheaper labor sources. Unions are American, strongly American and are severely needed in the business cycles of today. Let’s hear it for the unionized workforce. Ya Hoo!
Obviously you don’t live in California where gov’t employee unions have a stranglehold over gov’t
The exact opposite is true.
How would a union prevent jobs going overseas? Drive their company out of business entirely?

I am a single senior, very liberal, a registered Democrat and very verbal through internet to elected state and U.S. representatives, letters to editor, etc, etc. I live at the 7000 foot level in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. I have been here much too long and would like to escape if I can find a willing person to help me. I really like California, especially Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego.
Take the blinders off buddy. Unions are driving the manufacturing migration to the third world.
I think Jimmy took a wrong exit on the information super highway.
In Chicago, the unions are trying to keep Walmart (and other “big box” stores) out of the city and have been partially successful robbing Chicago of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of sales tax revenue
Obviously a product of the NEA Union.
Unions were critical in first helping level the playing field between labor and management in the early 20th century. This balance collapsed when management became interested only in their own wealth and power and in supporting political candidates who would increase that wealth and power. Then, with the advent of the world economy, American unions became destructive by crippling American business’ ability to compete beyond our borders. Further, since most new jobs in the US are information-based, non-government workers don’t see any benefit to union membership, esp. as the unions support ever more far-Left politicians. Unions survive as unofficial subsidiaries of the Democrat National Committee, supported 90 - 10 by government and college workers, the two least productive groups in the US.
Jimmy may also be joining us to try to better himself.
And you'll be gone soon TROLL.
Ozone and Vikings Kitties are in in your future sonny.
Her ward has totally gentrified with yuppies. Her based was priced out of the ward.
Most interesting is which wards the authors consider the most significant to mention. Why mention Bernie Stone. He was guaranteed to win.
The real shift if Fioretti winning in the 2nd. Aldermen tend to “control” what happens inside their own ward. Fioretti in the loop/southloop area will have the most control of any alderman in the fastest growing area, and in development for the Olympics. He has come from “no where” to where he could be the 2d most powerful person.
