Linux and Solaris face off
Reg Dev ^ | April 13th | David Norfolk

Oliver Jones provides an even-handed summary: "I've been a stalwart Solaris x86 user for many years now - I refuse to run Linux on my hardware, when Solaris makes the penguin look decidedly second-rate." For reliability, he says: "I truly can't fault the Sun option: I consider that if Solaris is good enough for the banks, it's good enough for me."

But, he also says: "To be honest, Solaris isn't without issues - the number one I see at the moment is the user experience (especially with regard to hardware support). Sun really needs to plough some more development resources into hardware support, but we're getting there: Solaris x86 is absolutely fantastic compared to how it was in 2004, but it still has a while to go. Having the likes of Nvidia on-board is great, and hopefully the hardware support will accrete with time - as more people see the benefits of going Sun."

Having used FreeRepublic’s search function to review every thread GE has commented in during 2007, I can state the following with a degree of confidence.

Fact: GE always comments on threads relating to Linux, to criticize or belittle.

Fact: GE usually comments on threads relating to Windows, always to defend Windows OS as superior in every way, denying any negatives from unbiased sources regarding Windows security flaws or other deficiencies.

Fact: GE occasionally joins in to slam OS X, doesn’t necessarily slam OS X, but will frequently point out that OS X is not open source. Apparently, GE likes OS X, but not as much as Windows.

Pact: GE occasionally speaks well of proprietary Unix, admits occasionally to using various BSDs (that was a surprise to me). GE loves SCO, hates Groklaw and must be torn in two over IBM.

Fact: GE only rarely comments on non techie threads, and never with the same enthusiasm as the threads in which he slams Linux. GE’s greatest vitriol is reserved for Linux and Linux users.

BTW, which of the seven versions of Vista do you run on your notebook with only 512mb of RAM?

Shadowman here said just the other day he had been using Linux "exclusively on his laptop for years" when the fact is he's got a Windows partition on there.

That is a lie. I do not have a Windows partition on my computer, nor did I ever have a Windows partition on this computer.

Yes you did, or still do, inside the virtual machine. Windows couldn't even exist without a "partition" for it to reside on. Obviously just more lies to try to cover the original ones you were using Linux "exclusively". Strange world you live in, thinking that kind of BS will fly LOL.

Hey that's pretty good, you might finally be someone who could bring some sanity to those guys that keep posting lie after lie about Linux. What would explain someone being so compelled to repeatedly post the most easily debunked BS over and over again? No doubt I don't care much for some of the leftist whackos behind free software like Richard Stallman, but at least he's honest, more than I can say for these jokers.

ummm you’re showing your lack of insight again. VM runs off a file not a partition by default (though It *can* be given a partition.

The only thing even close to partitions regarding partitions is *if* youre running esx.

He had a Windows partition inside the VM. He has now lied twice, at seperate times claiming he didn't have either on the machine. Why would someone be compelled to make such obviously false statements?

Many Linux users don’t care a think about using Linux because of the politics. It’s Microsoft they don’t like and Linux just gives them a free alternative. Some are ideologically driven, but many aren’t.

That "partition" is not a partition on my computer. It is a file. Again, I've never had a Windows partition on my computer.

Yes you did, inside the VM, much like inside a zip file. The lengths you're willing to go to lie about it are almost astounding, until I realize who I'm talking with.

Do you know the difference between a partition and a file?

It’s Microsoft they don’t like

So their hatred causes them to lie. That's what I thought, too.

No, I didn’t say that. What I said, or at least intended to say, was that they use Linux because they don’t like Microsoft.

I stopped using Windows because I grew tired of sloppy performance on good equipment (Dell desktops and Sony notebooks) and because I like to customize my system and use new software without it costing me (and without resorting to piracy).

My wife stopped using Windows because I bought her an Intel iMac (which she loves).

your lack of knowledge does not make him a liar. A VM is not a partition. Partitions are distinct physical separations of disk and resources files move around and are thus not distinct.

You're out of you depth on this one let it go.

twn,

youre wasting your breath with him, Myself, Shadow Ace, AR, and many others are not ideological.

I Work with Solaris and AIX (and help out the Linux team where I am), at home I have Two Apples an X86 Solaris box and a Linux box (I have a P5 workstation on the way). Yet because often I find Linux the best tool for a job and because I dont think OSS is evil incarnate he trolls every oss thread he finds.

Do you know the difference between a partition and a file?

Obviously better than you, especially in the context of virtual machines. The partition(s) reside inside the virtual machine file, much like an image backup or zip file would. Since you're apparently obvlivious to the most basic concepts regarding virtual machines, I suggest you study some of these links from vmware.com that describe "partitions inside" Virtual Machines.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22partition+inside%22+site%3Avmware.com&adult_done=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch&adult_cancel=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fweb%2Fadvanced&_adv_prop=web&ei=UTF-8&vf=all&vm=i&fl=0&n=10&fr=yfp-t-501

Then you might have enough sense to come back and apologize for the lies. Doubt it though.

Here he is, hacker N3WBI3 who’s still spreading the lie Windows 2000 is quote “unsupported”, when you can still get automatic updates from Microsoft till 2010. What posseses someone to repeat a lie like that for over a year now we can only wonder.
