As long as the subject has come up, it's been a year last night, since we had to unexpectedly put our 13 yr English Springer Spaniel to sleep. She developed something called, 'bloat', that evening. The vet told us there was nothing they could do, and in a matter of a few hours, she was gone. That was hard to take. We still haven't gotten another dog. Sometimes I think I want another, but for some reason I can't bring myself to do it.

Off topic, but the non-muslim Indians have a very low birth rate...kinda akin to EU. The muslims have a birth-rate that's out of this world.

When a distant cousin on my mother's side passed away, his beloved collie, who was in good health at the time, just went downhill and was gone a few weeks later. They can become depressed just like humans, and depression can lead to physical maladies, some potentially fatal. I remember a documentary that showed a young monkey (old enough to take care of itself) that got depressed and died shortly after its mother died.

"Folks...I would suggest you go easy here. It is all too easy to discount these people as whack jobs with their priorities mixed up, but there are many elderly people to whom thier pets are nearly the sole source of companionship in their lives."
Well stated.

Greyfriars Bobby didn't commit suicide, but kept vigil at his master's grave in Edinburgh for 14 years. Got a statue and a movie out of it...much better than committing suicide.
If the Indian couple were believers in reincarnation, they should have considered the possibility that they might be reincarnated as fleas.

I love my dog and cats dearly, but I still think that this is an overreaction.

Compared to the food-recall threads, this story is a cheerer-upper.

They were probably hanging around [thanks, Ahnold!] until their dog finally croaked.

So sad that they didn't think they had anything else to live for.
