I sure wish I understood this stuff well enough to comment.

What is the real meaning of this difference? What is it that FSF and Torvalds are arguing about, and what is the real effect on users?

Torvalds is objecting to elements in GPLv3 that would essentially allow the software writers to control how hardware is licensed and used in a legal sense.

I'm not sure at this point what the effect will be on end users, as I don't yet know how each software project will license its code, and how the two versions of the GPL will/won't work together.

As I use GPL'ed software, I find this interesting, even if I don't understand all the details. :)

It appears to me that this is part of the open-source paleoanarchists' strategy to scuttle any attempt to make linux a profitable business tool. These nutz despise capitalism with every black twitching fiber of their malignant marxist hearts.
