Choking Owner Says Her Dog Performed Heimlich Maneuver by Jumping Up and Down on Chest
CALVERT, Md. Mar 27, 2007 (AP) — Toby, a 2-year-old golden retriever, saw his owner choking on a piece of fruit and began jumping up and down on the woman's chest. The dog's owner believes the dog was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life.
Debbie Parkhurst, 45, of Calvert told the Cecil Whig she was eating an apple at her home Friday when a piece lodged in her throat. She attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself but it didn't work. After she began beating on her chest, she said Toby noticed and got involved.
"The next think I know, Toby's up on his hind feet and he's got his front paws on my shoulders," she recalled. "He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest."
That's when the apple dislodged and Toby started licking her face to keep her from passing out, she said.
"I literally have pawprint-shaped bruises on my chest. I'm still a little hoarse, but otherwise, I'm OK," Parkhurst said.
"The doctor said I probably wouldnt be here without Toby," said Parkhurst, a jewelry artist. "I keep looking at him and saying 'Youre amazing.'"

I had a yorkie-poo that would eat his "stew" and would spit the peas out on the floor! ;-)
My sister's cocker spaniel watches television. The dog would see what is on tv and follows what is on the screen. The dog sometimes reacts to it. For example, a cat moves from left to right, her head follows the cat moving from left to right. It isn't just animals. This is strange.
Never underestimate the power of cheese. My older shepherd has some pretty bad skin allergies that act up this time of year, and I end up giving him quite a bit of oral meds to stop the itching. That dog would swallow a handful of gravel and wood chips, if only it were wrapped in a slice of American cheese....
I had a 15 pound pure white cat (not an ounce of fat on him either) that was as deaf as a doorknob. He LOVED hockey and would sit in front of the TV and try to play with the puck. It was the only thing on TV he'd mess with.
I now have a pit bull that loves America's Funniest Home Videos - especially anything that has small animals (hamsters, squirrels, etc.) There was a video on there one day of a chipmunk (I believe) going nuts and running around in circles, and here's Rebel in front of the TV with his head going around and around - it was hilarious!!
My other dog, Rosco (who escaped from our house one day - never to return :( ) would eat the cheese and spit out the pill. You could smoosh that pill into the cheese as hard as you wanted to, wrap the cheese in bacon and dip it in gravy, and he'd still spit out a perfectly clean pill. I swear he'd grin at you after he did it.
Our [not so nearly heavy as your guy] deaf white cat loved watching tennis ... she'd sit up intently during the volleys and lay down during the commercials and then sit up again when the match restarted. Sadly, a coyote got her.
