Choking Owner Says Her Dog Performed Heimlich Maneuver by Jumping Up and Down on Chest
CALVERT, Md. Mar 27, 2007 (AP) Toby, a 2-year-old golden retriever, saw his owner choking on a piece of fruit and began jumping up and down on the woman's chest. The dog's owner believes the dog was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life.
Debbie Parkhurst, 45, of Calvert told the Cecil Whig she was eating an apple at her home Friday when a piece lodged in her throat. She attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself but it didn't work. After she began beating on her chest, she said Toby noticed and got involved.
"The next think I know, Toby's up on his hind feet and he's got his front paws on my shoulders," she recalled. "He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest."
That's when the apple dislodged and Toby started licking her face to keep her from passing out, she said.
"I literally have pawprint-shaped bruises on my chest. I'm still a little hoarse, but otherwise, I'm OK," Parkhurst said.
"The doctor said I probably wouldnt be here without Toby," said Parkhurst, a jewelry artist. "I keep looking at him and saying 'Youre amazing.'"
I have a pig that rescued an entire family out of a burning house.
He also helped me file my income tax return.
He hops around on three legs pretty good now.
I'd never eat an animal that smart all at once.
"I'm still a little hoarse"
with a big dog.
Even if the dog's jumping on her caused her to laugh (that's what I'd do) and the resulting air expelled the apple, it was still a remarkable thing. I hope she fixed him steak for dinner.
ROFLMAO....how true...that would be my labs attitude...he loves apples
good one.
Your comments cracked me up. Are you sure they'd wait for you to expire?
Woman Says Dog Saved Her by Performing Heimlich Maneuver (Reason #8 to own a dog, not a cat)
GREAT pix!!!
Someone included this tidbit in an email to me today ....The cost of raising a medium-size dog to the age of eleven: $ 16,400. Not sure the source as these things go ... but it sounds about right.
I'm wondering if the dog could have saved her with the ever classic hind-lick maneuver?
We had a Golden who was like that. The old boy was merciless, and everything was fair game until it was chewed and swallowed. One of the most likeable prankster dogs I've ever known (I think a lot of his personality rubbed off on Ursa when she was a pup), but an utter chow hound.
Cats would never do this! They would think it beneath their dignity to help a member of their staff that happen to be in distress.
Just another example of why people should never call an animal 'dumb'. All should remember that 'dumb' has more than one meaning. Yes, it can mean 'stupid', but it also can mean 'incapable of speech'.
Hope she appreciates her canine companion more than she ever did now.
Mine will gulp down a whole bowl of dogchow and leave the Flaxseed oil capsule to relieve his itchy skin.
Love your picture. I'm saving that one, if you don't mind.
This is interesting, sometimes dogs do things that are inexplicable. Did it have any idea what it was doing?
Nice coincidence.
I don't believe the dog knew to perform any "Heimlich maneuver".
He was probably "panicking" or just highly concerned about her change in manner and this was his way of reacting. Sort of like a panicked person shaking the victim to try to get them out of it.
I'm sure he did indeed intend well and had his own natural reaction to the owner's problem, but didn't specifically know if he was doing something he'd seen on TV. ;-)
