Merriam-Webster | Slip 18

Posted on 03/27/2007 6:36:20 AM PDT by Slip18

March 27, 2007, Tuesday, STULTIFY

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today. Tomorrow I’m bringing in chains, so beware.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

STULTIFY

Pronunciation: 'stul-ti-"fI
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -fied; -fy·ing
Etymology: Late Latin stultificare to make foolish, from Latin stultus foolish; akin to Latin stolidus stolid

1 archaic : to allege or prove to be of unsound mind and hence not responsible
2 : to cause to appear or be stupid, foolish, or absurdly illogical
3 a : to impair, invalidate, or make ineffective : NEGATE b : to have a dulling or inhibiting effect on

Home from work and cooking pork roast-

Queen Hillary is not a shoo-in
For the height she seeks to reach
With the way she seems to stultify
The words of any speech

Most of the time she's boring-
Neither happy or sad
Other times her eyes glitter
As if she's run quite mad

Maybe she's schizophrenic
Or paranoid in the extreme
I hope she has a Dean moment
Complete with a primal scream

Indeed sad news about Tony Snow-I'm sure all our prayers are with him. I also had a co-worker once who fought liver cancer off and on for a number of years-there have been many advances in treatment and it is not allways an automatic exit any more. -my co-worker also had hereditary heart problems, and died suddenly from a heart attack instead.

Wilt the Stulitilt was a very tall basketball player, but even he would have problems wading through the democrats' lies about Iraq.

My professor's usage of Democratic campaigns as the tell-all examples of Congressional politics only stultifies any attempts to learn the material...

How wonderful and sad at the same time.

My dad never went to the doctor no matter what. His back was killing him so he went to a chiropractor. The chiro took x-rays and lo and behold his ribs were like paper. The chiro did do some things to him to get rid of the pain. He died nine months later at the ripe old age of 62 of multiple myeloma, bone cancer or bone marrow cancer. It's been a long time.

My mom is 82 and still giving us all the Catholic School guilt trip. She's really good at doing that. She cannot work me that way any longer, oh, but she tries. I just laugh now instead of disliking her. She loves Cyber.

Take a hot bath with epsom salts to get rid of the stress. It does work. Just dump a cup or so in the water as it is running. Ummmmmmm, life is good. Oh, a coctail in the bath helps, too. Don't dump it in the water, though, drink it slowly.

A++++ for you.

I'm late for this thread -- apologies -- but the work was so stultifyingly urgent. I couldn't wait to finally leave.

Now I ended up taking the day off because my coworker, who we will refer to as 'Typhoid Scotty,' handed out the flu as a freebie to three of us so far.

Long nap. Now I'm going watch National Treasure, since they've been blabbing about it for the last year on The History Channel. I hope this is as good as all the hype.
