The fall of "Rome." A series cut down too soon. I know you're sad, fans of "Rome," perhaps on a couple of levels now that the SERIES finale has aired. (If you haven't watched, go away. Come back later.) I feel your pain. I certainly wish there were five or six more seasons left of it. But there's not. All hail the next DVD boxed set - may it contain loads and bloody loads of extras.
Before I call out like the town crier - loved that guy and the way his fingers were placed, his arm motions, vocal inflections and nod to local advertisers - here's a short story about "Rome."
Friends, brothers, Romans, fighters, drinkers. All hail! All things considered, you can bet HBO wishes it still had "Rome" on the bench. But this is not really the fault of HBO. The first season was a slow build and very, very expensive. Even with foreign partners helping foot the bill, including BBC, it was one of the most expensive series ever, shot on the world's largest set in Italy. The length of the filming took its toll. Money was short. Production was even halted for a bit. And still - not an especially large audience stateside, a minor amount of buzz, and looming contracts with the actors to deal with.

As for the lack of big battle scenes, that's not what the show was about really, and as a series it couldn't compete with 300 or TROY (as another example) in that category.
The best part last night was seeing Atia return to her former self, and b!tch slap Livia. There is only one queen bee, and she is it. She was one of my favs.
If the show had more of a longer shelf life they might have started even earlier in Roman history...perhaps with Spartacus or even Sulla.
She was great. I hadn't seen the actress who played her since "Patriot Games".

Each Sopranos season gets progressively worse. Last year was awful.

They hinted at the years in between - each episode actually took several years.
In between Octavian going to beat Marc Antony was the Judean war for example. This was hinted upon, but that's it. As were other events.
I guess it would have been like trying to cram all of World War II into two seasons.
Her rivalry with Servillia was the best part of the show. Of course, the way that ended was somewhat rushed as well.
Why not start it with Romulus?
If you enjoy historical fiction, check out the novels about Rome by Colleen McCullough. I can't remember the names, but I thought they were very good.
Skip it and let I, Cladius fill in the blanks and season 3 start with Nero's reign
Then again, they were, in my opinion, short on material.A lot of the aventine (sp?) stuff wasn't very good.
The Aventine stuff was terrible, Vorenus & Pullo as crime lords just didn't work. And too many useless subplots that went nowhere and weren't interesting, i.e. Timon & his brother and who really cared if Vorenus' daughters liked him or not.
