The fall of "Rome." A series cut down too soon. I know you're sad, fans of "Rome," perhaps on a couple of levels now that the SERIES finale has aired. (If you haven't watched, go away. Come back later.) I feel your pain. I certainly wish there were five or six more seasons left of it. But there's not. All hail the next DVD boxed set - may it contain loads and bloody loads of extras.
Before I call out like the town crier - loved that guy and the way his fingers were placed, his arm motions, vocal inflections and nod to local advertisers - here's a short story about "Rome."
Friends, brothers, Romans, fighters, drinkers. All hail! All things considered, you can bet HBO wishes it still had "Rome" on the bench. But this is not really the fault of HBO. The first season was a slow build and very, very expensive. Even with foreign partners helping foot the bill, including BBC, it was one of the most expensive series ever, shot on the world's largest set in Italy. The length of the filming took its toll. Money was short. Production was even halted for a bit. And still - not an especially large audience stateside, a minor amount of buzz, and looming contracts with the actors to deal with.

I would watch Kevin McKidd read from the phone book...yum..yum...
The Herald has spoken.
It was a great series. I'll miss it. The fiancee and I had an italian food night and wine every week when watching it. :)
Next is the series about the modern Romans - the Sopranos. Last season sucked thought, hopefully this season will be better.
It was budget / production costs that caused the show to be canceled. The finale last night was good, but seemed rushed. Too bad more battle scenes from Actium weren't shown. I shall miss Pullo and Vorenus- and that hottie, Marc Antony!
No really wide shots either, of the final parade in Rome. Ah well, great nonetheless.
He did a great job on that show. Looking forward to seeing him in "The Last Legion".
HBO did the same thing with Carnivale. Excellent show. I was ticked because it seemed so unfinished. ::sigh::
Seems that HBO bites off more than it can chew with these shows.
I first saw him in Anna Karenina. He was super!! Tell me about 'Last Legion'. I did not hear anything about that.
The one complaint about it I had was I felt it moved too fast but I guess that was because they knew their time maybe short.
I'm praying the Sopranos writers got the message about how awful last year was and they'll get back on track. It'd be a tragedy for a show that was so good to finish with a whimper.
If anyone is interested in seeing a continuation of the story, I would highly recommend "I, Claudius," since in a lot of ways it does mesh with "Rome."
I will miss Pullo and Vorenus though. Those two were very much a dynamic duo!
Great Ending..."Let me tell you about your father"
I have seen a few of the episodes of "Rome." It was good, but not as good as "I, Claudius."
Plenty of wide shots during the sex scenes however.
You can always wait for the sequel:

Will the Third Rome Fall to Islam?...

Thanks to fjordman.
It was a great show, but they couldn't have continued it from here... what to do after Octavian comes to power? They would have had to jam more stuff in the middle. Then again, they were, in my opinion, short on material. A lot of the aventine (sp?) stuff wasn't very good.
